My boss says that when he tries to get onto hotmail on his home pc he can get on no problem - but when he's on his laptop it comes up with an error message saying something like "requested URL not available". Any suggestions why this might be?

Hmmm - not off the top of my head, my first thought would be to try another browser to rule out any possible malware issues.

Okay, suppose I could try that. Also our IT guy at work suggested it could be something to do with a pop-up blocker but I don't really see how that could be write, or what about an antivirus blocking out that site as unsafe? Thing is I know nothing about PC's but my boss knows even less!

How do you connect to the internet at work?

Is it just on his Laptop or can he get hotmail using another PC at work?

I'm not sure how hotmail works these days but it probably still uses some activex which can be blocked similar to a popup. That's why I recommended a different browser, if it has the same problem then you know it's something more general but if it works then it's an issue with the original browser or plugin, I find it's the quickest way to narrow down this type of problem.

Need to know a little more about the scenario to be honest.

Are you talking about him using his PC and laptop on the same internet connection? It works on the PC, but not on the laptop?

Or is he using the PC at one location and the laptop at another?

What version of Windows is he using? Which version of Internet Explorer (Help > About - while in internet explorer.)

Is it just hotmail he cant access? what about www.msn.com or http://webmessenger.msn.com/

Thanks for the replies. This morning I got into an email from him which said he'd spent an hour and a half trying to connect to the internet with no luck. To me it sounds like a virus as this was the problem I had with mine.

His laptop is a home laptop but he also has a wireless work laptop and a home pc which he uses at home. He's tried connecting to the home laptop from the wireless connection but has the same problem which makes me think it's a virus.

fruityloops, it may be that his work laptop has been barred from acessing hotmail. Most company laptops utilise their own internal servers for connection to the internet and block things like hotmail as they cannot regulate them and they can easily propogate viruses. Can he access hotmail on his work laptop at WORK! If not then he will not be able to at home. Can he access any internet sites on his home or work laptop?

Is it only with hotmail or other sites too, using the home laptop?

It was only hotmail he'd noticed before but now it's all sites. Our work allows hotmail but it's on his home pc that he can't access hotmail (never had a problem before a few weeks ago). I think it sounds like it's on go-slow now meaning it took him an hour and a half just to get to the internet.
