PC Packed Up!

I turned on my PC this evening and the box simply did three long beeps and the fan kept whirring but absolutely nothing - the monitor came up with the Gateway logo but then did nothing.

I called Gateway Technical helpline (even though i'm pretty sure i've just over 12 months old) and they have agreed to look at it if i send it to their Technical centre. The helpline guy gave me the tele no for DHL and also Gateway's Account no so i won't have to pay for postage (thank goodness!)

Anyone have any ideas anyway? I've dug out the old laptop so weird with a small keyboard!

Deleted the boot table, corrupted a system file or hard drive is dead...and they should be okay with fixing it when just out of warranty.

3 beeps sounds like a memory problem. have you had a look in the case to see how many memory sticks you have and what kind of memory you have?

Thanks for the advice. I was going to have a look inside as someone did say a memory thing but I don't want to tempt anything! Maybe if they wonlt repair it for whatever reason, I'll be daring with the screwdriver.

Thanks for the pointers - wil keep these for if needed!!

notice any burning smell round back of base? if yes then prob blown/faulty psu.
Could be just a corrupt bios this would be 1st thing to test as it costs nowt.
then pull memory and try again after that see if u get a different POST code

If it was a hard drive error then surely there's be an error message from the bios?

Im prettys sure this is what happened to my mates dell the other day. We just yanked out the Ram and the videocard, turned it on. Then off. Then stuck each stick of ram back in. Seems to be fine now.

Yep sounds like a ram issue which if the case is cheap to fix if they dont fix it for you.

Around £15 for 1 gig of ram normally

As it sounds like none of the above u may find yourself getting a bill for the repair, i personally would clarify the t&cs that they are collecting the machine upon, as they may then hold it to ransom.
Pull the side off and reset the bios. many companies slap bills ou u for nff returns.
