Mate has a laptop, was told by BT to install PCTOOLS Spyware to help remove problems which she did, it will scan for free now but no longer removes the viruses etc it just tells you about them and asks you to enter user name and registration key, which you have to pay for and she didn't know about. However, since she installed it she can no longer get online or open programmes as the PCTOOLS seems to have "frozen" everything. Control panel cannot even open remove and add programmes it just ocmes up with ....... "is not a valid win32 application" and says this on many other attempts to open stuff.

Can I download anything onto disc from the internet and put into her laptop to fix this problem? If not what else can I do?

Help to fix the problem will be very much appreciated, and rep will be given to those that help me get it working for her again!! Thank you !!!

There are quite a few free anti-spyware tools out there, e.g. AVG antispyware or that may now be included in the AVG 8.01 pack.

Alternatives are PCTools spydoctor. I will have a hunt around for the links.

Yes, I know but the problem is she has no internet connection now as it's been messed up by something, but can I download this software to disc from my PC and install it on hers? Many thanks.

Bit dubious now. If she has no internet connection, how'd she get spyware on the machine? Is it 2nd hand?

I have already mentioned can I download a programme onto a disc from my PC. If you read my OP PCTools is what is on there and causing a problem!

I would suggest taking the machine around to your local friendly PC repair shop - NOT PCWorld! You should find someone who knows what they're doing and will probably be able to repair the laptop for relatively little money. Unless you're confident with PCs (and your original post suggests otherwise :) ), I wouldn't suggest attempting a Windows repair, which is possibly all it needs, on your own.

If you really don't want to pay anything and are prepared to take a chance on losing everything on the laptop, try either the PCTools forum, http://www.pctools.com/forum/ or possibly the laptop manufacturor's website for advice.

Thank you both. Currently I cannot even open msconfig it's not good AT ALL!

It is not a problem to lose everything anyway she just wants it back up and running again.

try system restore. all else fails then reinstalling windows is the only way.

Hiya, just wondering if you could clarify something. You say these problems have been happening since the software was installed yet you also said she can use it to scan her pc but no longer fixes problems. That would suggest to me that the software worked fine while it was running on a trial version and the problem hasn't been there since installation.

You also say that the software is reporting errors but not offering a fix without the key. What errors was it reporting but couldn't fix? I think your problem is more likely to lie there. If your friend uses peer to peer and hasn;t been protected due to trial expiring it's quite possible it has been infected with a virus.

If that is the case and she just ants it up and running and not bothered with losing files then I think she should reinstall her operating system.

Some of these tools are absolutely lame and I beacme suspicious of one I downloaded, I was pretty sure the programme was actually another virus! I removed the programme from my PC and installed one that had lots of recommendations from other people.
Agree with Imraz, might need a sytem restore or reinstalling if all else fails.

Hi all, I have managed to do it myself by going into safe mode and removing PCTools that way.
Now the laptop starts up no bothers, but it is saying viruses are present.
I am in the process of installing windows defender and AVG (due to money issues)

It was a cyberlog x and trojanlop.com plus many other things that have come via limewire, etc etc.

The reason why nothing worked at all is because PCTools basically froze all the software on the computer apart from it's own which was why nothing could be done with it running in the usual way.

Thank you for all your messages of help guys. xxx
