Whats the best way to do this? I don't have Media Center. I ideally want to play more than just WMAs

Any advice?

Thanks

The 360 only plays WMAs, unless you use Transcode 360.

Lol... Windows Media Player plays everything.. MP3s, WMAs, Wavs etc. Well, almost everything.. M4Ps etc need codecs but yeah... it can play pretty much everything.

Install Windows Media Player 11 on your computer, it's free from here. This includes Windows Media connect 2.0, which means that all you have to do is lookup your PC on your 360, connect, and then choose the music you want to play. Well, maybe disable your firewall etc but that's fairly simple.

It also allows video streaming, although not DivX.. it's possible to get that to stream using some other program but I can't remember its name. Ask if you want and I can find out!

Hope this helps. :)

thanks for the posts everyone. Iceman - I meant ti will only play WMAs through the xbox 360. Ive connected up to the PC, but just say i download an episode of heroes, they are usually XviD or DivX or similar. Any good 3rd party software?

Btw repping you all

He wants to play video not audio
#11
yeah thanks add-man although to be fair i didnt make it clear. Im talking about videos, audios not a problem. I would just stick a laptop onto the computer and play it like that but it cuts the sound out and i dont have an external audio source.

I tried TVersity a while ago and just srewed everything up. Might try again soon when i have the head for it.
#12
you could always get a converter to change the file to wmv,its a pain but it might be the easiest way,or convert and burn it to a dvd
#13
Yeah thats what I did at the beggining but it was a hassel, froze up my computer, took ages. Thought something might have been released recently that makes it easier but I guess not. Do you know any good/fast/low memory converters?
#14
unfortunately i tried converting a 750mb avi to wmv and it took me 5+ hours
#15
That's what I mean. Too much hassel!
#16
get orb, great program - can stream xvid/divx/avi files no prob

TVersity isn't really as hard as everyone makes out...

You install TVersity.
You install the codecs required.
You give it access to the network (make sure no firewalls bock it).
You put files you want sharing into the library.
You ask the 360 to search for a PC.

That's pretty much it.

No, you didn't make it clear! :p

WMA = Windows Media Audio
WMV = Windows Media Video

It think it was a pretty fair assumption that when someone says they can only do WMA they attempting audio streaming. :whistling:

Don't mean to hijack Doneeone - but does Media Center stream all sorts of files? Just sorted my streaming out:X
#21
No its fine mate. I used Orb and got everythnig working. I'm not too sure about media center tbh
#22
Was it easy Donleeone? I also want to stream heroes on the "old xbox." Figure of speech"
#23
yes very easy mate. Just download Orb stick heroes in My Videos and search for it on 360 and your done!
#24
Orb wouldn't work for me :/ Saying an NSIS install problem. :S
#25

ye probs is =s dunno whats up with it. trying to sort now

i use tvserity aswell to stream divx, xvid and music across. it works pretty good as long as you have a good connection, if your xbox is wired then you wont have a problem but mine seems ok over a wireless b connection.
#28
Ok went home and had a few minor niggles with Orb but once I disconnected my Pc from the Xbox 360 and then re-added it everything was fine. I was going to rewatch Heroes Season 1 but was to tired for anything serious so ended up watch Family Guy Season 6 instead

Cheers to Donleeone for his help and everyone else too.

LO guys! well i had a right chew on b4 getting streaming avi's etc from my pc to my 360 untill i found a programme called TVersity. It ran ok but after the fall M$ update it stopped :( anyway i faffed about and eventually gave up untill last night.

Dl'd the july (i think!) version of TVersity h**p://tversity.com/download/, installed it and ran my cable from my pc port to the 360 and voila worked first time!

Remember to have ffd slideshow installed and also to have win media 11 ( i have it if any1 needs it, ya dig!?)
#30
erm.... aphex, why have you replaced the t's in http with *'s? :?

Anywho, if I remember right, isn't it that TVersity does on-the-fly transcoding to WMV? Is this also the case with Orb then?
#31
Yup Orb does, I started to download the other one but Orb worked better than expected so just stuck with that.
#32
Haha that's just me, im so used to putting them in as you can't put direct links on certain sites.

My bad some1 already mentioned tversity.

Yeah think so, basically open TV up add your file, ok it and thats basically it untill you start your 360 up.
#33
i dont like the idea of having to connect to the internet to use orb
