Does she have all 3, i.e. norton, avg and winpc all on here system....cos that would be a bad start, your only supposed to have one antivirus installed at a time....

I would uninstall all of those anyways and use avast anti-virus,
use cc-cleaner to clear any crap off the pc
use spybot and malwarebytes to help with spyware
then add a decent firewall like subelt personal firewall or kerio firewall,

btw these are all freeware; but well known and widely used programmes

Avast can run a boot scan that will detect and sort any virus before windows starts so it is a lot easier and far better then either of AVG norton and winpic hope that helps :)

i knew I had never heard of winpc lol its a virus itself, christ I am slow today, still if they have both norton and AVG installed and running its very likely that lots of things have slipped through the net and they will be conflicting

WinPC = Spyware as mega has mentioned.

You'll need to remove it - Run AVG/Avast virus-scan, then download and run MalwareBytes - It should get rid of it, but for further removal if required, try Spybot Search and Destroy.

You can download all of the above at filehippo.com

Tell her not to download or install any antivirus or spyware unless it's an update for what she has.

Also I recommend uninstalling Norton (google it) as it is probably conflicting with AVG. You should really only run 1 Antivirus and 1 Firewall. You can have several anti-spyware progs as long as they don't all run at the same time (many run when you open them and force it to scan, rather than active scanning, although Spybot I believe does run constantly in the background)

ok so you think avast will pick it up? remove avg? run avast and remove winpc?

sorry for being thick

Yes Avast will defo help, its always been better then AVG in my experience; is you do a search on here there are a few threads with similar advice I and others have given against using AVG, winpc itself is actually a virus/spyware that is apparently quite common, (even though I hadnt really experienced it) just google it you'll find ome removal methods; in future though I would probably have running what I suggest in my first post; and download them all from file hippo to ensure they are safe :thumbsup:

oh and your not being thick; at least you know what an antivirus is and its importance; some people live on in blissful ignorance until they are hit with a **** load of crap on there pc's :)

sure well I'll subscribe to the post; and try help if I can; as im sure the other guys will; I will probably be watching the game tonight so If anyquestion is unanswered I will get back to you a bit later; fingers crossed for you; also it may be handy to remove winpc in safe mode; and use cc-cleaner to back up your registry; (it does it when you install) and prompts you to do it. :)

safe mode f8 while booting up yes? do i download avast before doing this?

sorry for the delay; the programme itself is called CC cleaner; I think your best plan of action is to

1. download CC cleaner, avast home edition; and spybot search and destroy;
2. install CC cleaner run it and clean the crap off the machine and back up registry
2. uninstall AVG, try uninstall/remove winpc and install avast;
3. run a boot scan with avast;
4. install spybot search and destroy and run its scan;
5. reboot into safe mode if you cant remove winpc and try remove in safe mode;
6. re-run the boot scan of avast a few times making sue you check the box so it looks in "archive" and hidden folders
7. if in doubt about a system file quarentine it.

finally when you think winpc is removed re-run a spybot scan; and an avast scan; and maybe add malwarebytes and use that to scan to; then re-run cc cleaner and back up registry :)

obviously im no expert but this is what I would standardly do maybe some of those steps

To be fair I wouldn't class myself as an expert either, and not doubting your abilities :) Just seemed like that glaring point was being overlooked :? I still think AVG is fine though, not had a problem with it :P

But Norton needs to go - No ifs or buts, get rid!

Also meant to say good work on the removal instructions :thumbsup: Spot on to do list. Just remember when removing Norton, you need to download the Norton removal tool (google it, easy to find) to totally remove all traces.

definately worth getting cc-cleaner at least; it cleans sooooo much crap off a pc; and I would reconment spybot as an extra measure; as for AVG im still not a fan; it virtually allowed 20 odd virus onto my mrs pc which AVAST found and got rid of; since then I have always backed avast over AVG; but in fairness if your used to AVG etc might be worth sticking with it cos it cant be that bad lots of people use it; oh and defo only have one anti-virus what ever you do :)

Did you install Comodo Firewall? It's good gear too.
