ok comps peops, my pc refuses to shut down automatically. can anyone tell me how to get it to do it. It cant be good me having to press the power button to shut down, esp as that puts it into fail safe a lot.

I go into start, shutdown and it takes me to logging off and just sits there. grrrr.

have run my full escan in depth virus scanner and it has deleted anything it has found.

any advice or software to run to sort this out would be appreciated. thanks folks.

Start > run > shutdown -s -f -t 00
Click ok.
See if that does it.

Sounds like the dreaded Vista updates.... check to see if you have outstanding updates.
You may need to re-download these.

Vista is a nightmare for updates, Microsoft have totally scuttled this product....:geek:

Do you mean it starts to shutdown then hangs or does it do nothing?

There are several methods to shutdown a PC. You can either brielfy press the power button or select one of the shutdown options on the start menu. Try both.

Did it used to work and now does not, or has it never worked?

Also have you looked in Control Pannel at the Power options. Under one of the tabs should be an entry for "When I press the Power Button on my Computer", set it to "Shut down".

hi, i go into shut down as per, and it takes me to the logging off screen, then just sits there with the cursor whirling round. i have to power off at the power off button to shut down manually.
have checked out the power options, and they are all on the factory settings so its not that, so far as i can see.
looking for other options to resolve.
its only started to do this this past week, and it didnt seem to coincide with any updates.

They've tried, and they tried my way in run, which should do a forced shutdown (-f), and that didn't work either.

How long have you left it at the shutting-down screen for? Are we talking a couple of minutes, or several hours?
