Pc world salesman talking nonesense

Just been with a guy I know to help him buy a laptop and we were asked why we did not want norton also. I said because its too expensive and even though it may be better now it has always been too system hungry. I said for now he will use avg free. He laughed and said thats not a good choice and went to to say that a virus or spyware can attack the cpu and eventually burn it out so you need a premium antivirus software.

I said to him quite bluntly that he was talking cack. Are they all clueless numpties? Another one said you can get a new op sys called win7 and its quite good!

They gave me an headache lol.

You should also be aware of Trojans that can smuggle burglars inside your house.

I was actually having this conversation with a mate in work ealier!

I hate it when I go to PC World or Currys or wherever and I know twice as much as they do! Yet they still try to tell you things. I tell them ive got a BSc in Business Information Systems and Computing and they shut up. I don't think i'm any sort of expert I just no more than those people do!! lol

He was only half talking cack as AVG free isnt a good choice - its rubbish!

Sometimes you get the odd one who knows what they're talking about... and in Leeds I had TWO who knew their stuff and were both extremely helpful!!

May not be total rubbish, if the processor is fully loaded at 100% all the time, then it will get hot. You're relying on a good heatsink to keep it from overheating.

yeah my mate worked there for a while, and use to give customers his card and say phone me later and i build systems. So if you show me the one you would buy instore ill build it for you and provide you with all receipts for warranty and do it for 20% less the price! :whistling:

Or even he would say look to be honest you dont need, this, or this, id recommend this, this and this which are free/cheaper.

Guess what? He got fired!

it is mostly because pc world sell norton, and the salespeople get a kickback from that
as far as being knowledgeable, they are not, and just have a 20 minute sales meeting and are told to sell and get the number up, and make up any old rubbish

norton does indeed have the rep of lagging down your system. no a virus doesnt burn out the cpu

yes, win7 is a new operating system, and is supposed to be a bit better than vista

avg isnt bad, but there are better free ones now, avast and microsoft security essentials being 2

I agree avg free aint the best but I have had no problems with it. I am thinking of changing though but will not pay for one:whistling:

I said but a nice clean install will sort it out and he actually said it will lay dormant in the cpu:-D

I feel sorry for peeps who have no pc knowlege at all walking in pc world.

What free av software do you use now?

not set foot in a pcworld for about 8 years, prefer buying computers online were the specs and price are clearer, (get mine from dell direct, but up to you!)

for free AV, used avg till version 7 got laggy, then used avast for a while, got 2 new machines this year, decided to try microsoft security essentials, like avast its light on computer, but is easier to set up, no code to get via email, and doesnt popup when it has updated several times a day.

I will not buy from there either but he wanted one today from a real shop(must be his age) so I was just helping him to get a decent spec for the money he had:thumbsup:

yes, its a shame they are one of the very few places you cant walk in, see and buy
argos and staples are another choice you can consider in future, some people insist on shopping that way still, but my principles against pcworld's salesmanship means i would prefer to wait for internet shopping instead. good on you for helping your mate out and giving the salesman a hard time!

Actually, i find things are not sufficiently labeled at pcworld, often on a pc some basic info is missing, videocard info etc.. also many of the items are store specific, so i have to go into store to look, then of course, I am stuck where i cant compare prices, much prefer the online experience, if only to satisfy i can read up on the exact item and know i am paying a decent price.

its not always true online is cheaper than stores, it is nice to buy an item right there than wait a week for the same price. I just feel unhappy these days about shopping in pcworld, supporting their bad customer service.

I work in PC World, and it **** me off about how people say it's sooooo bad.

Yes there are some assholes who don't know what the hell they are talking about I know that, but people like me do. I know a lot about computers and I am much more than a salesman. If I know a customer doesn't need something, I won't bother trying to sell it too them. I don't talk crap, I have NEVER had bad customer feedback or any angry customers.

So in the future, instead of saying things like "i have had one bad experience in pc world so the whole company is the devil!", try another salesman or another store......or simply tell the salesman he is a douche!

If it annoys you so much then you shouldn't do it yourself as you claim you don't like it when people criticise the entire chain based on one sales person yet you immediately then claim people should praise PC World because of you, a single person.

Like most people I've used DSG for many years up and down the country and I've yet to come across a single salesperson who had any idea what they were talking about, what I find irritating is that it seems a standard policy for salespeople to bluff their way through rather than just admit they don't know. I wouldn't expect to find any competent salespeople though as you get what you pay for and taking on staff who do know what they're talking about is generally not a good idea as they're likely to move onto a better job the moment they get a chance. I've also spent considerable time repairing computers the PC World have 'fixed' by not only making the problem worse than it was originally but charging for the privilege as well.

I went to best buy recently and the 3d tv man knew what he was talking about, I was impressed.

Went into pc world and the 18 year old (guess based on spotty appearance and attempted moustache) Kept insisting that one laptop was better than the other because "the screen is bigger"!! Bless.

Stalking? Wishful thinking, I'm afraid. It's more the point that every time I see AVG (or any anti-virus, for that matter) mentioned around here, you're on it instantly, without fail. Really, waht is your obsession with AVG?

Perhaps csiman genuinely feels it's a risk having AVG installed and is only carrying out a public service to all on this forum to make them aware?

Perhaps. The parallel I'd draw with it is more akin to that of a religious type, though. On the one hand, you have the quiet believers, who might tell you about Jesus or whoever if you ask about it. On the other, you have the fanatics that go on about Jesus continuously, and try and convert anyone who even mumbles a quick "Ah, jesus" when they knock their hand off their desk, or whatever. Csiman falls into the latter category.

Um, pot, kettle, black? Since I doubt if my comment a few posts ago had been written by anybody else, you wouldn't have batted an eyelid.

I'm really unaware of who you are other than that comment the other day.

Salesmen always try it on with the extras. Just tell them "no thank you". If they want an explanation the most I would give is "because I said so" and if they pressed any further I would walk to another sales drone and give him the commission instead.

This of course assumes I would ever buy a computer from the high street in the first place :-)
