Pebble, the innovative kickstarter smartwatch company, have sold out... sorry, been acquired by... Fitbit.

"Pebble is ceasing all hardware operations. We are no longer manufacturing, promoting, or selling any new products."

Bad news for anyone wanting to buy one... or anyone who had backed their PebbleTime2 Kickstarter project.

"Active Pebble models in the wild will continue to work."

Well that's good news...

"Functionality or service quality may be reduced down the road. We don’t expect to release regular software updates or new Pebble features."

Oh great. Well that's a waste of my £150 for the PTS then!

Oh and... "Any Pebble currently out in the wild is no longer covered by or eligible for warranty exchange." WTF??!!

pretty **** that they're pulling all warranties on all pebbles, I didn't think that was legal? hopefully the two pebble times in my house won't break anytime soon..

Wouldn't have mattered, you'd have gotten all your money back, if they even had charged you at all :p

Mine recently did - such good support, replaced it within a week! Such a shame they're selling and closing up shop, love my PTS and would have loved a PTS2. Looks like Fitbit are just buying them for the software not the hardware (whihc was imo better than Apple!)

I was incredibly pleased with the original pebble, the Pebble Time was a side-grade rather than an upgrade in my opinion, and I have backed the Vu Pulse kickstarter, so I wasn't interested in the Pebble Time 2's - I will get wireless charging and heart rate monitor added to my Pebble Times :)

How can they then legally walk away from existing products? That's disgraceful behaviour, I hope people boycott Fitbit over that, disgusting

I love my PTS, gutted to hear this news

Surely in a take over, FitBit would take some responsibility of the existing products?

Fitbit did a great deal with PureGym. 6 months free gym for a £100 watch. Worth it.

Mines going back to 02 or wherever the heck I bought it from a few months back...

This is disgusting, I'm sure it's breaking some law especially regarding the warranty.

I sadly saw this coming. I have loved my original pebble and PTS. Their continued support and updates were great. I also used to rate Fitbit, but what they are doing here with the warranty is disgraceful. I'll no longer being buying Fitbit (for what it's worth) :(

if 'pebble' as a company is dissolved, nothing illegal about revoking warranty in the same way as if the company goes bankrupt.

Well the future for the watch as worn doesnt change much until the battery dies.
The app store will shut but that doesnt delete stuff on the watch already.

Guess i will have some time to find a smartwatch that prioritizes battery life and simplicity.

Why does the battery dying effect the future of the watch... just charge it! :p (tbf, battery will last a good long while!)

I just got the same email as a response to my request for a warranty repair and asking for a RMA.:( I've got screen corruptions which is a common fault so may have to fix it myself.

Can't understand why Pebble have sold out to Fitbit, pre-order for Pebble 2 on kickstarters was quickly snapped up and they must have had alot of interests.

thanks for the headsup - disappointing as we have one here...

It's gutting for everyone who ordered a PTS2 on Kickstarter... apparently they've even started shipping some of them, but all the rest will just get refunds. But they made millions from the Kickstarter, plus they must have all the production set up and ready to go.

God knows what Fitbit offered them, or threatened them with, but it must've been a huge sum!

In reality, most of the kickstarter companies hope that they will get bought out by a bigger company and just get rich. Oculus is a case in point.

The game is to just have a good product which catches on and then hope a FB, Google etc come along, wave some ££££ and its bye bye product.

I probably should have sold my BNIB Pebble Time a month ago when I had the chance. I thought I'd do it closer to Christmas as it might go for more, ha doubt it now. Only selling as I prefer my Pebble Steel

This is really disappointing news. Someone on Reddit has archived the whole app and watch store to a torrent though, it's 1GB but might be worth grabbit before ****bit take it all down.

Also it might be worth buying things like a spare charger before stock runs out.

I've had 2 pebble steel fail on me within a year. First one had display all fuzzy and jumbled and now this one the buttons do not respond. Was about to send it back when this news broke.

Really poor !

Damn I wanted the pebble time 2. Why can't Fitbit or some company with the means keep it going? Pebble is everywhere, every catalog and becoming more popular everyday.

So silly of big name dumb watch companies not to take pebble on as their smartwatch offering.

Here's an article from Backchannel.com about what happened:
The Inside Story Behind Pebble’s Demise

Pebble's take on the smartwatch will be sorely missed. As my Pebble Steel has the screen tearing issue I was eagerly waiting for my Pebble Time 2, and sadly now I've had to buy an Apple Watch.
Today I had an email from Kickstarter to notify me of my refund, so that's all been sorted out quickly at least.
