People urged not to travel to the USA or Mexico-THOMAS COOK CANCELLED FLIGHTS NOW....

People have been urged not to travel to the United States or Mexico as senior officials held emergency talks over the deadly outbreak of swine flu.

The European Union's health commissioner, Andorra Vassiliou, advised people to postpone their travel plans unless "it is very urgent for them".

His warning came as Spain became the first country in Europe to confirm a case of the virus after a man who returned from a trip to Mexico last week was found to have the virus.

The unnamed man returned to Spain on April 22 and was put under observation on April 25 with chest problems, Health Minister Trinidad Jimenez said.

not sure about symptoms, but i think its very similar to normal flu..Anyone who has fluey symptoms that get rapidly worse, are supposed to call their GP and will be investigated if they are believed to be infected.

It's a virus, so no cure as such. Maybe I'm wrong, but is it not just a more sever version of the flu you usually get, so it's mainly people with weaker immune systems that are at risk, i.e. over 65's/kids?

many of the people who died in mexico (over 100 now) were between the ages of 25 and 45 and were all very healthy people

Q: What is swine flu?

A: It is a contagious respiratory disease that usually affects pigs caused by the type A influenza viruses. Pigs are hit by regular outbreaks. There are many different types of swine flu and the current cases involve the H1N1 strain of type A influenza virus.

Q: How do humans catch it?

A: While people do not normally catch it, humans can contract the virus, usually if they have been in close contact with pigs.

It is also possible for the constantly mutating virus to spread from person to person, which has happened in the latest outbreak.

Experts believe it spreads in the same way as seasonal flu - through coughing and sneezing.

Q: What are the symptoms?

A: The symptoms of swine influenza in people are similar to the symptoms of a regular human seasonal influenza infection and can include fever, fatigue, lack of appetite, coughing and a sore throat. Some people with swine flu have also reported vomiting and diarrhoea.

lol youve started something now!
they dont reckon this strain was caught from pigs, as there have been no reports of outbreaks. Its still unclear where it started.
So get that gammon in the oven!

Calm down, don't worry. You're not going to catch a virus from dead meat. A parasite maybe, if it's poorly cooked, or you might get poisined by a toxin if it's improperly handled, but not a virus. By needlessly stressing yourself out, you're only going to impede the efficiency of your immune system, and that's going to do no good for you. Relax.

If it goes pandemic, you'll have cancelled a holiday for nothing smithy!!

The H1N1 virus can be treated with the anti-viral drugs Tamiflu and Relenza. These have proved very effective in the US cases, I believe. At present the UK is very well stocked - having enough doses for 25% of the population and they said today tht production will be increased.

That's the case with 'usual' flu but pandemics tend to work the other way and affect younger fit people, under 50 , like in the WW1 pandemic.

Because of the reaction in the body it's actually healthy people aged 25-45 most severely affected.

Just heard the EU mention the large stocks of Antiviral drugs in UK,Does this mean we are expected to hand them out to other countries in the EU who havent stockpiled ?.

I received the below from my father in law who is one of the top AIDS researchers in the world: -

"We have to wait and see. The deaths in Mexico are worrying. However, its unclear how efficiently this virus is spreading. I think it could all fizzle out from this point. On the other hand, it may gain in efficiency for spread and there could be trouble. Going on the last century, we are overdue a flu pandemic. However, there may be a dozen or more false alarms before it happens. The good news is that this strain is sensitive to the two types of influenza inhibitors and I believe (could be wrong) that they both have been stockpiled in Britain. The vaccine should also be ready before winter.

So don’t worry yet."
