Perfect weather for my doggie's last weekend. Tomorrow she has to make her last journey

We promised her a special final weekend and it was lovely that she could be out in the sun where she was always at her happiest. All her favourite foods but no energy left to swim or chase a ball and even the sofa was too high for her now. I hope there are plenty of armchairs in heaven because as soon as Gods back's turned she'll be up in one. Twelve and a half years of unbridled joy but tomorrow morning she has to take her final walk. Thank you Sacha for all the happy memories.

I had to take my little scotty terrier in to the vets to make that final journey, and I was in tears watching her drifting off to sleep, the tears were streaming down my face. But I'd rather she slept in peace than living in pain. :)

Its really nice that you put a lot of effort in to making her final weekend an enjoyable one as possible.

I lost my dog Max 18 months ago he was 14, on his last day we took him to the pet shop and let him choose anything he wanted (to take with him) broke my heart and even 18 months on i still cry when i see photos of him or read stories like yours. I found online this when max died thought you might like to read it:

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

When I had to take my dog to the vet a few years back for her last vist - I cried my eyes out. (She was about 13 years old.)

It may well have been for the best (and I accepted it was), but it didnt make it any easier. Probably not the most helpful thing to be saying under the circumstances, but it is a clear way of saying you have my sympathies.

Time is a healer, but you'll never forget your loyal friend.

As it hapens, we were with friends yesterday who had a 3 month old Golden Retriever (same breed) and it did make me tempted. Problem though, it would be unfair on the dog as it would have to spend too much time on its own which I'd not want to do.

My heart goes out to you, our cat of 20 years recently died and life just seems empty without him. Hopefully you have another dog, if not then maybe you will make room for another one in your life as all they ever want and give is love.
Take care, my thoughts are with you.

stood by your bed last night... I came to have a peep. I could see that you'd been crying, And you found it hard to sleep
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear, "It's me. I haven't left you. I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast... I watched you pour your tea. You were thinking of the many times Your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at my grave today... You tend to it with such care. I want to reassure you That I'm not lying there.
I walked you towards the house As you fumbled for the key. I gently put my paw on you... I smiled and said, "its me."
You looked so very tired As you sank into a chair. I tried so hard to let you know That I was sitting there.
It's wonderful for me to be So near you everyday, To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, Then smiled... I think you knew That in the stillness of the evening I was very close to you.
And when the time is right for you To cross the brief divide, I'll rush across to meet you And we'll stand there side by side.
I have so many things to show you! There's so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out, Then come home to be with me.

were going to wait a while, nice to have a holiday without worrying about who's gonna look after the dog and if she's going to be ok.

I feel for you, we lost our best friend Tara on 16th August 2007, that day going to the vets was terrible but for the best as she was in so much pain.
We will never forget her.

kids want her back.

That is so sad, im really sorry for you, i have never been a dog person (im allergic to cats & long hair dogs) but my sister recently adopted a shnauzer and he is amazing, as soon as i walk into her house he collapses on his back waiting for his tummy to be rubbed, i love him to bits,

Ohh There All So Lovely.
It's Just The Worst Feeling Ever :(
I'm So Sorry Everyone, Losing My Cat Was Enough, But A Dog Is Like A Man's Best Friend.

Kingy shes lovely, been over 3years since we lost our labrador.

None of us could take him to the vets sos poke with the vet and he agreed to come and do the necessary at home then take him away. Was nice and peaceful in our own lounge, when we have to do the same again id choose that way every time.

Hope it all goes ok for you

I have to admit going into the vets that day was heartbreaking - no point in telling you it wasnt, the vet explained how it would be painless and he would simply fall asleep in our arms, we had the choice to leave but we didnt want him alone

It was all very calm and the vet encouraged us to speak to him as he drifted off to sleep, this was very hard i was in tears stroking his head, afterwards we were left alone with him as long as we wanted.

I'll be thinking of you tomorrow, i just wished i knew what to say o make you feel better but i dont, sorry :(

Thank you everyone for all the kind words. We know it isn't going to be easy tomorrow for OH, kids and me - we've had it before with cats, first time with dog though. We've had lots of tears today but know we're doing the right thing. We will remember the happy bundle of love we had for so long and all the joy she brought into our lives.

Awww so sorry to here this, I know how you feel. Lost one of my Springers back in July 2007 and it still hurts like hell.

At least you're doing the right thing and ending the suffering, be proud that you're a responsible pet lover.

In our thoughts today, hope all goes ok.

Ours was rescued too, to me this thread just sums up that a dog isnt just a pet hes part of the family :) Thats only a good thing

She slipped gently off to sleep in our arms and whilst we're still numb, we do feel a huge weight has been lifted. We do feel remarkably at peace knowing we've done what's best. She will be missed.

you poor thing losing a pet is so hard but you have to think of the bigger picture if they are in pain or have poor quality of life would you really want them to go on like that?
on the plus side and to try to make light of the situation, you won't have to go doggy walks in the rain, sleet or snow!
hope you feel better about your wee dog soon :)
#34
You have done the right thing for the one that you loved and cared about, try and remember all the good times and the love she gave you and you gave her. I expect she is causing havoc up in doggy heavan already :)
