Personal Broadband

Hi, I was just wondering if it would be feasable to buy a broadband connection for a room? The reason I ask is my dad locks my internet after midnight so it goes slow as hell, and Id like to buy a seperate line for my bedroom.

Id only need it for my xbox so it wouldnt have to be lightning fast but Im unsure as to whether any companies would be able to install broadband without any phoneline or other obligation.

thanks :)

Get a mobile internet dongle

http://mobile.broadbandgenie.co.uk/

Edit;

Though for your xbox you would need to use it on a laptop / pc and then share the connection from that and it would probably be expensive so not worth it

You would need cable if you want to use the internet without a phoneline. Also using 3g for gaming would mean a very laggy game.

Ta, Mobile internet isnt really an option tbh.

Double post :S

The problem is, After midnight the firewall switches from allowing all 360 connections (open NAT) to blocking them all (strict NAT), and being as Im awake all night and asleep all day. This is a problem!

How does he lock it?

Edit lol beat me to it, you must be psychic

Thought about giving your dad some dough not to lock it after midnight?
#7
Tried that, but he locks it beacuse it p*sses me off. Priceless apparantly.

Is unplugging it possible?

so what makes you think he'll allow you to install a personal line into your room? Just an insight parents will do anything to get you to move out. Mine ****** off to Spain.

If you can get another router just replace the one he's got installed  and hope the cable company hasn't registered the MAC

Nein. We have 1 web/fileserver, 1 media server, 2 pcs and 2 laptops using the same router so no go on the unpluggo :(

You could always go wireless and pay a neighbour for their security code

Ive already been 'politely informed' that paying my own internet bill I can do what I like. I did the same with my phone, freeview, tv, xbox, pc, cars etc etc

Why not offer a compromise then, tell him you'll pay £x towards his connection

Already wireless, But sharing a bridge with my brothers xbox that is pre-configured to connect with my dads router.

EDIT: and already tried offering to pay towards connection, which ends in 'fine, pay the electric bill as well'

Never researched it but maybe possible to hack the router?

I think he needs a slap what's your address :)

Ive hacked the firewall and router before, but just not worth the hassle for the all the trouble that follows.

back in the day, my step dad had put a password on the computer BIOS so I couldn't get on. Popped the battery out for 3 mins and hey presto got access lol things were so much simpler then.

Things were so much simpler back in the days of Win98 lol. My dad is a pro network tech and has been for 20+ years so unfortunately he has the edge on me with network locking etc.

It looks like your out of luck then and will need another phone line

They cost £124.99 to have put in which will then tie you into a contract too with BT for the line rental, Pipex would offer you a month by month rolling contract on the broadband though but it's probably no good to you

Alternatively there is Virgin but again your looking at a £30 install fee and a 12 month contract

I work alternating days and nights so sometimes can't sleep till past midnight, like last night. But have since moved out of my parents they weren't too fussed about me being up past midnight :) they were however really fussed when I wasn't working and staying up past midnight so your theories makes sense.

Another alternative is using the post office - they install a new line for £110 and there is no 12/18 month contract. Just wish I'd known about this sooner!

Son number one did it to me so i have experience:roll:
Parents mostly want whats best for you-despite what most of you think!

TALK to your Dad and find out why he is doing this-is he being reasonable? i.e is he short of £ to pay the elec? or is he wanting you to find a job? excuse me if you are working:oops:
Maybe if you act responsibly maybe you can get him to relax the rules?
