It ain't really, our Defence budget is very poor. The lads and lasses out in these sh*t holes deserve the best. Something this goverment has failed to provide them. This goverment has over commited our armed forces and now morale in alot of units is at an all time low. Our Armed forces are the best in the world, but they ain't equppied like it. If Blair (who I can't stand) wants to commit our troops to stupid conflicts the least he could do is pay them what they are worth and equip them with the best that money can buy. Most soldiers have bought alot of there own kit as the MOD issue is poor. Why should they have to do that?

Spot on paddy..my son has just returned after a 6 month tour of Iraq...and their equipment is deplorable...Land Rovers that were used for the trouble in NI that are completley useless for the job in Iraq...small tanks that are from the 60's era that are the equivalent of being in an oven when in use in temp of 50 c...you even suffer skin burns if you touch the metal as it gets so hot from the engine heat.

My lad was saying how better equipped the Australian Army (who were on the same base) were with modern vehicles with air conditioning ..and as for the Americans well it was no expence spared for them.

As you say it has had the inevitable impact on morale with so many of his regiment talking of resignation...so the powers to be have decided to give them 4 weeks leave in the hope they will change their minds...my lad is fine and wants to remain in the Army but the Iraq experience will take its toll and it is far more cost effective to provide the proper equipment than to waste finance on continuous recruitment and training to keep the numbers up.

I spent 6 months out in Iraq, that was enough for me, I served In Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland (which I loved my little un was born there). I just felt let down by the goverment and the MOD when I was out in Iraq, a friend I was in Infantry trianing with was killed out there. Thats when it hit home to me, I put my 12 months notice in and left. I'm a lot happier now, get paid more money to do a better job and I come home to my wife and daughter every night. I loved most my time in the army, but Iraq changed me. I'll still support the troops out there, they are doing a very difficult job with inferior equipment and have been let down by a incompentent government.

We spend the 4th largest amount in the world on the military, it's amazing how little of it seems to get down to the infantry, the RAF and Navy are getting new planes and Super carriers, shouldn't the infantry get something?
