hey im with BT and my phone line comes into the house near my front room window and then trails through the front room and into the hallway to the bottom of the stairs and thats where the master socket is. Now we are doing some decorating we want to hide the line but ideally shorten the length of the cable to just under the front room window is this possible or do i have to get BT out with a possible charge of 4 trillion pounds??

anything up to the master socket you are not permitted to touch, you have to call BT out to do it for you.

There usually plenty of ex BT engineers in the local papers that do work cheap, get BT involved at it will be about £160 minimum

Openreach are the only ones allowed to touch the Network before your master socket. Saying that if all your wanting to do is hide the cable I can't see a problem with that. It's only two wires if you did to decide to shorten it usually orange and white, blue and blue white or orange and blue, just keep the colour code the same at each of the cable. Your service provider is likely to charge in excess of £125 for this, again as suggested you could phone a telecom engineer from yellow pages who will charge around £30 for this work, technically he ain't allowed to do the work but most will do it. I would charge about £30 for this work but if possible would renew the cable from point of entry to NTE

whilst this is true, I doubt BT have records of where each master socket is located. Just put it where you want but make sure it is done by someone who knows what they are doing!

They don't and to be honest some sockets are located in ridiculous places. It's only 50v DC to the socket so it ain't gonna hurt you. Attempt it yourself as I said, make a note of the colours at each end and you can't go wrong.
