Find the BT master socket in your property, unscrew the fascia and plug a fixed line telephone (that you know works) into the 'test' socket inside. Then carry out your investigations again.

BT is responsible for the infrastructure from that master socket back to the exchange and so on. Your responsibility covers everything beyond the master socket within your property, so to find whether it is an external problem or not start there.

Sound advice, could well be one of the internal wires loose or disconnected. Best start here.
