Phone number for a manager at the DVLA.

Does anyone know a phone number that will get me through to a manager, or someone who knows what they are talking about, at the DVLA.
I bought a car back in March this year.
It has a private number plate on it that the original owner wanted to keep.
No problems so far. I don't want that number.
He sent off all the documentation back in late March to do the change of ownership and transfer the number.
I have phoned him a few weeks ago to find out what is happening as I have not heard anything and tax is due tomorrow on this car.
Turns out DVLA or Royal Mail have lost the documents.
I can't tax the car 'cos I have no documents.
Previous owner can't tax the car 'cos he has no documents and also he no longer has insurance for it.
DVLA said I can't drive the car from tomorrow as it wont be taxed and it could take up to four weeks for me to get new documents.
I want to go on holls in 9 days time.

There must be someone I can speak to who can get this sorted.
I'm surely not the first person this has happened to.

Have you been to your local DVLA office?
I say local there is one near me in Nottingham it seems like something that would
be easy to sort in person....

Looks like your nearest is here:-
Chelmsford
Swift House, Hoffmans Way, Chelmsford, Essex, CM1 1GU. 0870 850 0007

Roughly 20 miles from centre of harlow.
Worth a phone call first, as you say there has to be something they can do
Good luck.........

Have you tried emailing the CEO? I think he is called Clive Bennett, and am sure you can find the @ email address on the net somewhere.

I have previously contacted the CEO's of SKY and BT after various ongoing problems, loads of phone calls, and continuously being told different stories by different members of staff at both companies (absolutely appaling customer services from both!), that I decided to go to the CEO of both.

I mentioned in the email that I would sent the same email every day to the CEO until someone got back to me and I felt the issue was resolved.

Within 24 hours, both SKY & BT had come back to me with named Customer Service Managers who were dealing with my queries - I had contact numbers for them both...and got issues resolved..as well as some 'compensation' for being messed about so much

May help!!

Not the best advice, but the driving without tax is only a fine, and i've seen quite a few people driving without tax.

This is where the rules get stupid i think, as long as it is MOT'ed and insured, why does it matter who it is registered too? The government still get their money, and there is a legal car on the road.

Do you not have any reference numbers at all, either from the reminder or a V5? it can be done online then

You dont need a reminder or a log book to get road tax made!! You just take a valid insurance and MOT and their is a form in the Post Office and fill it out to who the car belongs to as you just say you lost the log book and they will give you the tax disc and they will fill that form out and give it to the DVLA! The downside to this is that you get a new log book and no history of previou owners!!

These so-called "cherished" numbers are a pain in the a***.Like you i bought a car with these on it and it took over 3 months to sort out.I had been told the documents are in Coleraine(local office),Swansea, lost, mislaid, every excuse under the sun.Meanwhile i was stopped by the police because i was not the registered owner and they didnt want to know why that was.Had to be careful where i parked(no tax).Total nightmare.Never again will i go through that palaver.

Can't do this as the car is still registered with previous owner at the moment.

Yea just do it and get taxed as you may end paying a fine? The plate will be in tour name then pay, around £50 for the name change for the plate and both of you eill be happy? he may be taking time as he needs another car to put on which costs £50 or retention which is £110 which they are avoiding?

No, you misunderstand. I can't do this. they wont let me.
I don't have the documents.
He doesn't have the documents either.
The people at the post office wont do this 'cos as far as DVLA is concerned, the car still belongs to previous owner.
They can't do that form filling thing anymore now.
Haven't been able to for quite some time now they said.

So tell DVLA to do something, they are always good at sending fines out when its their own fault in the first place!! This is waht anoys me as you try to sort it and they ignore you and fine you and then they be like well you should have informed us!! Just go down to your local DVLA office and tak to them! Have you got a reciept saying you purchaced the car?
