Photobucket problems. Beware.

Not sure if this has been posted before but chesso wanted to warn others of the very real threat below...............

"There is a problem with photobucket - it is redirecting to a scam virus warning site which puts a virus on the computer i.e. claims that you have a problem but itself infects you.
It has happened to me the two times I have used photobucket today. I have e-mailed their tech team and they are aware of the problem. I was OK with the latest Avira but I will avoid photobucket for a while."

A small tip is that if you happen to get caught DO NOT click on anything but just press ALT & F4 and use CCleaner or similar and then reboot.

If anyone else has first hand knowledge and/or tips to help please post. It's a real pain to get rid of.

thanks Hotto, when the popup appears i think you have to press alt F4 to close it safely... alternatively use task manager to get rid of it

Best to avoid it until they get it sorted :?

This seems to popping up in more and more places. ( Excuse the pun )
I've had this a couple of times.
I used malwarebytes and spybot search and destroy to get rid of it.

I did eventually rebuild my pc but that was more for having a huge, overdue, cleanup of all the garbage I had accumulated over the years.

Yes I think you are right "phil". I know there is a very similar problem relating to Facebook and opening messages/pics.

The difference with this one is that, for me, I didn't have to click on anything. All I did was try to sign in to my Photobucket account and all these pop ups started to appear.
Getting rid of them and the subsequent junk that appeared was much more difficult than the normal.

Given that this is not a new problem I'd love to know why Photobucket and others have not put in safeguards to stop it happening ??

Be careful folks.:?

Not sure csi.

I'm very wary about trying to sign in again although I have a feeling Rockyfella tried it late last night and managed it with no problems. ??

Is this the virus that looks like Windows Anti-virus? it must be widespread, because there was another post by a hukd user yesterday, and I had it the other day...I wasn't on photobucket though. Anyway, if it will let you run malwarebytes then that should sort it. Not completely convinced that I've removed it all though..

Thanks hottoshop - let's hope that no one becomes infected.

csiman - I have found that the attack can come at any time if you try to 'do ' anything e.g. resize or upload. Photobucket seem to think that it piggy-backs on an on-line advert.

In response to my query yesterday photobucket said, amongst other things
I am incredibly sorry for the inconvenience. We are aware of the situation and are actively tracking
and trying to remove the threat at this time.
Also, in dealing with these incidents, we do recommend that you utilize one of the many
anti-spyware/malware applications available to help protect your computer.

One such program can be downloaded at the following link:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

We also recommend ensuring that all available browser updates have been installed for the
browser you are currently using.

Please note, if you believe your computer has been compromised, you may have to run an
anti-spyware/malware application more than once while both connected to and disconnected
from the internet to ensure that you have completely removed the threat.

i dont agree with any threads, other than those selling stuff in the fs boards, but when admin can post two threads in there that clearly belong in feedback, then surely this is worthy, even if its mod locked and mod bumped every hour or so

I don't ever venture in there now-a-days, but it seems this is directly relevant and a good idea by you.

yesterday, I had to deal with a pc infected with antivirus 2010

unfortunately, they have now modified it, malwarebytes does not run, even in safe mode if you rename it too

system had to be resintstalled.

I had that and malwarebytes wouldn't run by double clicking it.
I managed to get it to run by right clicking it and selecting run.
But that's too late for you now.
And that might not work now anyway.

didnt think to trty that! besides, i think the system was due for fresh go, it was really infested, sometimes fresh install is the best way.
then you know nothing is left behind. thank you for the tip though.

My girlfriends laptop got infected with this last night, how is it executing itself?

There is a registry file here that will let you remove it...

I'm clicking all over photo bucket and can't get anything.

Just braved it myself and ok so far.

I notice they have taken down most of the advertising and changed the upload frame.
Hopefully they have solved it but don't venture on there because of what I've written !!
