he was supposed to put a protective ring around it until 6 white doves flew in with a stretcher made out of unicorn hair to take him away to safety...

He showed initiative. There was something on the pitch holding up the game, he got rid of it.

err no, if he showed initiative he wouldn't have kicked it further infield and so holding up the play more, he would have kicked it out of touch ;)

Kicking a hedgehog is acceptable but kicking an owl is going too far imo.

He does kick it into touch. The close-up angle is from behind the goal - you can even see the guy running over from the top of the pitch before he kicks it. :|

the Owl has died!

yeah :( and the player who did it is going down :)

It appears it was the opposing teams "lucky owl"

Panamanian defender Luis Moreno could get up to three months in prison for kicking an opposing team's lucky owl which was struck by a ball after landing on the field.

British national daily, The Guardian, reported that the injured owl kicked off the field by Moreno during a league match between Colombian football clubs has died.

A veterinarian, Camilo Tapia, said the owl went into shock on Wednesday, after having been taken in for treatment two days earlier.

It died in a local veterinary clinic in Barranquilla after Tapia was unable to save it.

On Monday, Feb 28, the owl landed, injured, near the corner of the pitch during a match between Atletico Junior and Deportivo Pereira. It was first struck by the ball near the Pereira penalty area.

Play was stopped.

Another British daily, The Telegraph, reported that as the referee and players discussed what to do Panamanian defender Luis Moreno - apparently impatient over the delay with his team losing 2-1 - was seen kicking the bird towards the touch-line with his left foot before Atletico Junior fans chanted "murderer" at him.

He had kicked the owl about three metres to get it off the field.

The New York Daily News reported that Morena claimed he had kicked the bird for its own well-being and quoted Moreno as saying, "it wasn't my intention to hit the animal. What I tried to do was wake it up so it could fly".

Humberto Mendoza, the director of the agency that oversees environmental issues in Barranquilla, has said he will investigate possible sanctions against Moreno.

In all fairness, the owl probably went into shock when it was hit by the ball. It looked more like he chipped it off the park, he didn't run up and blooter it off the park.

Sensationalist story imo...

Could have been worse.............if it landed on the pitch last night then Rooney would have smashed it's face in with his elbow before Cashley Cole shot it.

He kicked an owl to death! And the "story" is a youtube clip, which is quite sickening to watch.

it doesn't really look like a gentle chip to the owl, it does look like a boot in its face to get it off the pitch. Maybe next time he is down on the pitch with a injury someone should run up and give him a kick till he is off the pitch.
#32
how did it even get on the pitch? Just fell from the sky whilst flying? That probably caused the brunt of his pain and misery, the footballer was just putting him out of his misery euthanasia styleee
#33
lol at comparing an owl to a human, its an animal get over it.

If Howard Webb had been the ref he'd have give Utd a penalty if a Chelsea player had done it.

I think one of the animal lovers was so enraged that they decided to take it out on the humans by running over some of them in Brazil just for revenge! :p

Erm, but he didn't kick an owl to death. First the owl landed on the pitch, then a football struck it (as you can see in the clip), and then the player cleared it off the park. The owl died 2 days later, and not necessarily because a player kicked it. And the "story" I was referring to was the quote above my comment which was quite clearly a news report of some sort...

yeah, It probably had cancer or aids or spontaneously combusted perhaps. We just dont know the full story. I mean the Owl could have been a hitler of the owl world.
