I havent paid much attention to this but thinking back has happened to quite a few of my videos and games.

I have tried using the videos and games on a CRT and LCD monitor with same results, and have reinstalled Vista many times since then.

I was playing my Sonic CD on an emulator and noticed that the game doesnt run that smooth, I have dropped it to as low as 640 by 480 with no difference, made so no plugins or filters were used etc it runs fast but not smooth.

I use VLC for my video playback and notice often again the frame rate seems fine(maybe) but its not moving smoothly.

I only realised how laggy both were after using a regular dvd player for a change on a tv I use sometimes as a CRT monitor(though have a real CRT as well) and noticed the picture quality was better and the movie ran fast and smooth.

Any ideas?

Hi, Could be a number of things,

first upgrade ur cards driver, a newer driver might make ur card a whole load less laggier,

if vista is the issue, disable aero, that saves a lot, also for ur hard drive, run a disk cleanup and defrag, a comobination of all that should get ur pc running again,

if not could defo be a bad graphics card as its all sounds like thats ur problem.

hope that helps

Cheers, I doubt its the graphics card as had this problem with another graphics card the same, I use diskeeper so dont think disk has a problem and it doesnt matter if game is ran from dvd drive or hard drive, same for movies the lag is still there.

Could be a number of things.
Try disabling all other programs and unnecessary services one at a time, to see if that makes any difference. Bring up your task manager and see if anything obvious is using a lot of resources.
Check your system & event log for errors and warnings.
Make sure you don't have a virus!
Make sure disk keeper is not running a defrag job while you are using the computer.
3GB of RAM ? DDR2 memory usually runs best in pairs, so I hope that is 2x1GB & 2x512MB, if it is 3x1GB try pulling out of on the sticks.
Do a full error check on the hard-drive..
Check your BIOS (motherboard) make sure the processor & memory speed are set correctly (Google is your friend here, check motherboard forums), see if there is any updates from the manufacturer (this can be trick, so last resort eh?).
A Q6600 and a 4870 should be a very fast PC, even at default speeds. Remember though, emulators don't usually make god use of your graphics card, and will usually only use one core of your CPU.
Best of luck !

It's 3 gig since I damaged 1 gig stick in a house move, cant have a virus as only just installed Vista again a few days ago.

Task manager said 40 processes running but nothing taking much cpu though emulator seemed to spike it to like 20-25%

Interestingly the Sega emulator is more laggy than my PS1 emulator with maxed out settings.

What the "lag" is for example is say watching a video, theres no noticable lag when people are standing talking but when the screen pans say if seeing a skyscraper and zooming down it is a tiny bit jumpy.
