Playstation 3 guarantee?

£0.00 @
I was wondering where Sony stand with the current YLOD that you get on the PS3? I recently purchased a new PS3 and I think that the girl said that it only comes with a 1yr guarantee. Is that the case?…

What about the "5 year fit for purpose" thing that most appliances have, is that the case with the PS3?
Has anyone bought one recently?
Did you buy an extended warranty? How much did it cost and how long was it for?
Has anyone had YLOD on their PS3 and if so, when did it appear?
It is only a few weeks old, and I think I can still buy an extended warranty for £25 for another 2 years on top of Sony's one...I am just wondering if it is worth it, and do I need it...?
Thanks

sony only do 1 yr warrantee after that they will fix it or replace it but you have to pay. although they arent too strick on the YLOD ours was about 14 months old when we got the YLOD due to modem & ps3 getting lighting strkie, they replaced it with a refurb for free even though out of the guarantee period. Make sure you keep your receipt very safe though as if you do have to claim they insist on a copy of the receipt.

Alright Mark, how's it going?

The shop assistant meant they only offer 12 months guarantee... Anything past this then it's "supposedly" not their problem.

The sales of goods act states that a product should last a set time, which would be 5 years for expensive electricals. You can in theory ask for a replacement ps3 if yours died within 2 years, as it's not lasted a considerable time.

I would only buy the extended warranty if you really want the convenience. If you pay the ps3 with a credit card, you could in theory ask them to refund you if the shop won't budge (if the ps3 breaks down)..

I say the above in theory as there is no set laws or guidelines for shops to accept a refund / return on a 2 year old ps3 cos it broke down. You can try stating the soga act to them, if they won't budge then maybe try the trading standards.

What I have read, the YLOD was only happening on the 60Gb model, but as the slim is still new, no one would have experienced it yet.

Also the shop (if it's curry's, etc) they will try and wriggle out of paying you for the warranty

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the reply. 14 months, and you got a replacement, that's good to know. I wonder if this is what they are doing even although it only comes with a 1yr guarantee...I think Micrososoft upped the guarantee on the xbox360 to 3 yrs after all the problems? I wonder if Sony "unofficially" are doing the same...

Hi G,
Good thanks, how's you? Sale of goods act, that's what I meant. I think "realistically" it should last longer than 1yr, but as you say, it is up to Sony after a year and not the shop. It's only £25 and would take away any hassle, I was just trying to see if it is needed, or if Sony have been replacing them, and either officially, or unofficially giving out longer guarantees...There was something on Watchdog about it a while ago, but as I never had a PS3 then I didn't care! :whistling:
Have you been getting much work? You done any new sites?

* I was seduced by Uncharted 2. Finished it in less than a week, and I have to say, it is one hell of a game!

Yeah not so bad

It depends on whether you're willing to fight for a replacement

Yeah got a few jobs come in, check my site to see the latest work.

I want U2...... but don't wanna pay more than £25 :w00t: I'm a cheap skate

^^ Good info Johhny, ty. I am a new convert to next gen gaming, I was still playing my gamecube, orig. xbox and dreamcast up until last month, but I have to say I am impressed! Not turning in to a fanboy just yet, but I can see what all the fuss was about...

A year ago I've heard that PS3s were considered as expensive goods and were replaced/ repaird outside warranty periods.
That was when PS3 costed £350-400.

Could anyone tell me if it still applies as my friend just brought his PS3 from game for £250. He only watches BRs on it, doesnt play too much but as its bloody expensive blueray player he wants it too last.

Is £250 still considered as expensive item and could it be repaired/exchanged by sony if brakes in lets say 3 years time?

The game £25, 2 years extened warranty. Gives you only 1 additional year on top of the manifacturer warranty. If the PS3 brakes they repair it or give you a replacement and cancel the warranty. A bit unfair as peple think they will be covered for 3 years and can claim as many times as they want but in fact they are only covered until the first brake down

No such thing as "Expensive goods" as far as the S.O.G.A is concerned.

You have to decide how long a judge would believe a PS3 should reasonably last for.
The SOGA does not give you an automatic "free pass" to getting a replacement or repair.

Retailers will always try and fudge the issue, and deny you your rights.

It would cost them more than the cost of a PS3 to defend the case, so that is your strong point.

Hey guys,

PS3 went on the bends today, I bought it late 2009, meaning its about 18 months old. Sony are replacing my old PS3 with a new one free of charge. I don't know if this is me being lucky and putting my best charm on with the phone call, but from what I can see from today it was simply great customer service.

My advice, give them a call, be nice and see what they say!
