Huge speculation that a new "slim" model to be announced on 18th August 2009.

For the sake of 10 days or so it would be daft to splash the cash as if true, prices of old unit will fall and if the new model has the same spec there could be bargains out there.

Hasn't this been going on a year now. Wheres the source for this?

I haven't, and at £300 I'm unlikely to for quite a while.

When you can now get a standalone BluRay player for under £40, why is the PS3 still around £300?

Only a year!?!

Think it's being going on since the day after the release of the PS3.

not a great make plus it will be very hard to actually get one so your point is not 100% valid, the ps3 has a good blu ray player in it

Thanks Wizz, but this will likely be some over excited manager in one currys in the land that's priced it up wrong. PS3 still has the fastest load time on the discs, but this is due to the PS3 itself. But I will look out for one of these.

Tempted now to sell my ps3 60gb/250gb & get another one later.

My point was, bluray drives can be maufactured and sold at a profit (or cost) for £40. Surly the price of the PS3 should be below the £200 mark by now.

When the PS3 was launched, the drive reportedly cost Sony $100 per console. That was 3 years ago.

Technologies moved on since then so the £40 standalone bluray play, probably isn't that much different from what Sony put (or used to put) in the PS3's.

This is just a rumour mate :p, It's based on the fact that Sony have booked 3 hours in the GamesCom scheduled 18 August so it's possible and if so it's rumoured to drop by £40. They've also ordered about loads of parts enough to make a million PS3s. And apparently the 80GB is being discontinued.

The clue was the price : £39.97. End of line clearance.
