An ongoing discussion thread for the contents of the weekly (some may say weakly) PlayStation Store updates.

Primarily for European Store contents, although items exclusive to PlayStation Plus subscribers &/or other territories (North America, Japan, Hong Kong, etc.) may be discussed if desired.

Links to reviews, rumours for future content, &/or other information about current or forthcoming 'Store items welcomed.

Thank you.

Upcoming Change To PlayStation 3 And PSP Game Content On PlayStation Network

Countries: AE, AU, GB, IE, NZ

We’d like to inform you of some upcoming changes to the usage policies for PlayStation Network game content. As of November 18, 2011, the number of devices that can be activated on one PlayStation Network account for game content purchased from the PlayStation Store will be updated.

For game content purchased after November 18, 2011, a new policy will apply and the number of devices that can be activated will be as follows:

* PS3: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PS3 systems.

* PSP: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PSP systems.

Please note that this update will not affect game content purchased before November 18. The PSP rights include PSP-1000/2000/3000 series as well as the PSPgo system.

PlayStation Network users are able to change the activation setting through each device, and Sony Computer Entertainment plans to provide a new PlayStation Network account management website where users will be able to deactivate particular devices attached to their PlayStation Network account via their PC.

For more details on how to activate/deactivate the devices, please read this guide or contact consumer services.

Seriously WTF with all this Dirt 3 DLC. I will grab the Brink DLC as it is free but don't have the game, and have no intention of purchasing it. What a tool you may say and I couldn't disagree.

Not sure whether the 50% off AC1 for PS+ people will mean it is 50% off £9.99 or £15.99.

Does anyone know if the £2 off Limbo finishes today?

Free minis rule!
As a new plus member, I thought I would spend my time playing PS1 classics or getting DLC, however I'm finding myself playing minis to completion, reminds me of when game play was a priority.

Just been on the store, and downloaded two new dynamic themes, three Minis, Rayman, Comix Zone, Alien Zombie Mega Death and the Brink DLC. Total cost £2.55.

Good week for me :)

Alien Zombie MegaDeath looks pretty good fun and gets good reviews, looks like a cross between jumping jack and jetpac
#19
It reminded me of Jet Pac too.

Pertinent text from the above blog article:

Yes, it’s the one-stop shop for Store Updates and Plus content information and we’ve got it all this week, folks.

Let’s talk Plus -

The new service update today bringing the firmware to 3.70 improves your Automatic Downloads service, renaming it Automatic Update. Automatic Update will now automatically sync selected save games to your cloud storage and will also automatically sync your trophies with the server each time auto update runs.

And what of new Plus content you say?

We’ve got the small matter of the Resistance 3 Plus Beta which you play until early September; we’ve got day-one discounts and exclusive content for Splinter Cell‘s triumphant HD return to PlayStation; you’ve got 20% off the much anticipated and finally actually here Spelunker HD; you’ve got discounts on the new Worms 2: Armageddon DLC (the full game of which is already 50% off this month in Plus) and as well as 20% off five new The Studio themes and lest we forget friends, the pre-orders for our PLAY titles launch today with 20% off each. And we’re not done for August yet either.

And onto the Store Update! As well as the previously mentioned Splinter Cell titles and Spelunker HD, another Namco classic gets the snazzy reboot treatment with Galaga Legions DX and the digital precursor to THQ’s upcoming Space Marine, (my inner-geek is so excited for that one) Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team blasts its way onto the SCEE Stores.

You can now pre-order our PLAY titles for 2011, the first of which, Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition, releasing 24th August (and playable at gamescom if you’re coming). You should be able to find the Downloadable content appears for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Red Faction: Armageddon and more.

flamingcarrot sung that game's praises when it was available for free as part of the PlayStation Plus subscription (or £11.99 to 'regular' PlayStation Network members).

I intend to buy it after today's maintenance has concluded as one of my kids has wanted it for a while, but I like to own the games I buy as much as possible (rather than renting them on the understanding I will continue to pay for them forever thereafter).

FYI:
PlayStation Network Scheduled Maintenance
[ http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/08/10/playstation-network-scheduled-maintenance-4/ ]

* PlayStation Store on PS3 and PSP.

I will not be playing "Resistance 3" (again). If I were to buy it after release I would only be doing so for the continuation of the campaign mode story; although I went back to "Resistance 2" recently to try to complete the campaign mode there & I have lost interest since "Resistance: Fall of Man". For me, the series has got worse as it has progressed. The original title was, for me, the best & the later instalments (both PS3 & PSP formats) have tried to improve on something that ultimately has detracted from what I liked about the first in the series. In fact, in the last four years I have had the patience/interest to complete just a small number of video game titles; "Resistance: Fall of Man" was one of these. Also, to be fair, the reason I didn't take to the campaign mode of "Resistance 2" initially was because of the loss of the ability to play through the story with a local Co-operative partner (like I did with the original title).

I have tried to like "Resistance 3" but I am not keen on games that reward players with abilities ("perks") that give an unfair advantage (for a prolonged period). For example, after shooting three people in succession you can use an invisibility cloak to mean you may never get shot again for the rest of the match especially if sat at an extreme point of the map with a sniper rifle continually picking off targets.

The newly introduced attributes in this game (above the first two in the series) just detract from the game-play. Much like "Call of Duty"; it isn't how good you are; it is how technologically advanced your weaponry is.

A small point, but it still annoys me; the faces on all of the characters have no animation & look like their have been "photoshopped" onto their body or the characters are all wearing masks with a fixed expression.

The Human player's mêlée attack is at least a second slower than the Chimera's animation meaning the aliens have an advantage.

Most of all, the game (again, like "Call of Duty") gives me motion sickness (kinetosis) because of the way in which the on-screen characters move. I appreciate that is not going to be the case for a majority of players, but it is enough of a problem for me not to wish to play.

Other game-play problems exist that (I probably should not quote, but) I hope will be fixed in the gold/mastered edition (rather than in the second or third Beta revisions) but the whole game doesn't offer anything other than new maps.

Oh yes, & the lack of destructible objects. Just try shooting crates, or even the radios dotted around the map (in Wales). No matter how many rounds you use the radios just seems to keep pumping out a broadcast.

I just get the feeling that more effort has been put into ribbons & perks that a substantial game engine (pipeline).

Perhaps some others in the "Battlefield: Bad Company 2" & "Killzone 3" HotUKDeals Clan Roll-call... thread may feel differently & wish to join you online, but so far their comments have not been favourable either.

Sorry.

A three dimensional 'twist' on the typical two dimensional playing field of the game I know as "Frenzy" (on the BBC Micro), but you may know as "Qix" (Arcade game):

"CUBIXX HD Launches On PlayStation Store Tomorrow"

Posted on 15 August by Ross Brierley – Community Manager, Laughing Jackal
---
I’m Ross and I work as a Games Tester for Laughing Jackal. Laughing Jackal are the developer of classic PSN minis such as Duael Invaders, Ace Armstrong vs. the Alien Scumbags, Vibes, the forthcoming OMG-Z and, of course, Cubixx.

Today I’m here to talk to you about Cubixx HD the sequel to Cubixx coming soon exclusively to PlayStation 3. Cubixx HD is a modern-day take on classic area capture games such as Qix, but with an awesome twist: Instead of a 2D game field, Cubixx HD expands this addictive game concept across all six sides of a cube. That’s six times the danger and six times the fun.

Following on from the success of Cubixx we’ve added more; lots more, in fact. Cubixx HD now features 50 levels of Arcade action playable in both single player and 7 player Co-Op. All these levels are also playable in Time Attack, Score Attack and Line Attack modes, with up to 7 players competing at once and featuring over 150 online leaderboards.

That’s not all! There are also 50 super-addictive Challenges, plus – for the more competitive among you – the mayhem of Deathmatch mode, again for up to 7 players.

Cubixx HD also features a whole new cast of enemies. Aside form the returning Cubixx and Line Chasers there are the villainous Homers who will chase after you and slow you down, Asteroids who rain down death and destruction upon you and the Black Hole which sucks everything towards it.

As you can see, I’m a massive fan of Cubixx HD but obviously I’m going to be a bit biased seeing as I worked on this fantastic game, so how does this little quote from Official PlayStation Magazine UK’s 8 out of 10 review for Cubixx HD sound?

“The controls are smooth, the soundtrack is brilliantly pitched, and not since we had a post-op morphine pump has anything screamed ‘just one more go’ louder. It’s adamantium-boulder tough at times, but there’s never anyone to blame for failure but yourself. And for the stubborn among us, that’s the killer.”

So, grab on to your Cubot and join us for the amazing arcade action of Cubixx HD.

While you wait with anticipation for Cubixx HD to arrive on the store, why not get a head start in your quest for the top of the leaderboards using our Top Tips video?:

Cubixx HD is coming soon to PSN exclusively for PS3.

I have to agree with you after a few hours put into the beta. It is loosely a run and gun COD style shooter and I was hoping they would have tried to be different from style. But I guess they were trying to appeal to a wider audience and boost sales. They should have taken note of KZ3 and tried to be more unique but as you know KZ3 only appeals to certain gamers.

The perk system was enjoyable for a while whilst I got lots of kills with the invisibility, but the next round I suffered as a result of it due to a slow start.

Hopefully they may improve it for the final release.

On the campaign I was disappointed by Resistance 2 and did not end up finishing it. I got bored of it very easily and it was a shadow of its predecessor.

Yes, I can certainly relate to convince players that "Killzone 3" (or "...2" for that matter) s worth the investment in time.

Unfortunately, the online gaming aspects of "Killzone 3" seem to be dwindling away to very little activity within six months of release of the game; unlike "Killzone 2" that was still very active a year, or even a year & a half, after release.

...but that is why so many options exist because not one title suits everybody.

any good freebie games available?

You don't find to find games available to download at zero cost (on any major home-based video games console); downloadable content, yes, but not full games.

There are lots of examples of good trial/demonstration versions of full games on PlayStation Store though.

What game genres do you like?

Yes, I can certainly relate to convince players that "Killzone 3" (or "...2" for that matter) s worth the investment in time.

Unfortunately, the online gaming aspects of "Killzone 3" seem to be dwindling away to very little activity within six months of release of the game; unlike "Killzone 2" that was still very active a year, or even a year & a half, after release.

...but that is why so many options exist because not one title suits everybody.

What did you think of the Beta of "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception"? Will you be playing (online) from the first day of release?

I enjoyed the UC3 beta and will definitely be picking up the game on release for the campaign and MP. Watching the Gamescom trailer got me excited for what will be a very polished campaign. I think UC3 works better as a co op multiplayer rather than competitive and will probably spend less time on deathmatches and more on matches where objectives play a heavy influence.

‘Heads-Up’ Game Store Update 17th August 2011

PlayStation Store (via PS3, PSP and Media Go)

Hi everyone, welcome to the gamescom 2011 Store update. I’m at the show this week so to avoid leaving you all without a host, I place you all into the capable hands of Andy Stewart.

The star of the update this week is of course a large selection of gamescom related videos for all the hotly anticipated titles being shown – you’ll find those in their own section as usual.

For downloadable titles this week, several retail games get the digital download treatment, including Dead Space and Far Cry – but if you’re into fast-paced little numbers, you’re going to adore Cubixx HD – arcade puzzle action, where the simple goal is to cut away enough of the cube to move to the next level. This title supports split-screen local multiplayer, has loads of different game modes and looks simply fantastic – if you’re a fan of the genre you should definitely give it a go and even if you’re not I urge you to try the demo. Plus users get 20% off the asking price too, along with a free theme to download.

There’s a also a few more minis this week, including a Fighting Fantasy adventure, a selection of DLC for LBP2, InFamous 2 and more, and a selection of themes.

Speaking of themes there are a few points to bring to your attention this week – there are a couple of changes to the store front to try and make your lives easier. Firstly, the merchandising team have been hard at work recategorising the themes section to help you find the themes you’re looking for more easily – let us know if you think any obvious categories are missing.

Also, as part of our on-going store improvements, the store iconography has been updated across the board – let us know your favourites!

That’s it from me, I’ll hand you over to Andy. Bye for now.

Not even the "Premiere Pack Bundle" for Motorstorm Apocalpyse"?

Did you try last week's (single player) Demo of "DRIVER San Francisco", by the way?

I think I was right about the handling. Not a title I will be bothering with any further.

I'll most likely give the MS:A bundle a miss, I'm not really into this "adds a new car" type of DLC.
Didn't try DRIVER as (a) I don't have the spare bandwidth and (b) I've heard not so great things about it.

EDIT: Just purchased the MS:A bundle as it features some events as well as extra cars
