Sony's PlayTV service is set to go live in the UK September 10, with a European roll-out continuing through to December this year.

The device a digital TV recorder for the PlayStation 3 will allow users to recorded content to the console hard drive, even when playing a videogame.

"It's going to be September 10 that PlayTV comes out," confirmed David Reeves, president of the PlayStation business in Europe, reports Eurogamer.net.

They have.
You will be able to play games and record TV in the background. The update was included with the 2.41 firmware.

Niiiice, is there a limit, to how long recordings can stay on the hard drive and can they be taken off to say watch on laptops?

PlayboyTV would have been better :(

Dont really see the point of this unless you want to reduce boxes under your TV. A twin tuner 160gb freeview PVR can be bought for around the same price as this and you won't have to replace your ps3 HDD either.

No time limits, no DRM.

It records in DRM-free MPEG2, so you can copy to your laptop/Mac/PC/xbox with no restrictions.

It will support Freeview HD when that launches next year, free HD channels without the need for a dish

PS3 HDD can be bumped to 500gb

Slick, smooth interface.

DRM-Free TV and Radio recordings

PSP integration

Fair enough although I have read that the freeview HD support is not true as the spec for freeview HD hasn't even been decided yet. I'd prefer the standalone PVR personally as they consume far less energy than my 60gb ps3.

I assume this box will switch on your PS3 to record..................

Still, its yet another reason to add to the long list of reasons to choose a PS3 over a 360............;-)

My thoughts exactly

* Record and view your favourite programmes at the same time - Play TV enables you to record both Standard Definition as well as High Definition
* Personal Video Recorder functionality - watch live TV, pause, fast forward and rewind
* Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) to show what's on, now and next - up to 7 days in advance in certain countries
* Mobile TV functionality - export content easily from PS3 HDD to PSP - watch TV on the go! Thanks to live streaming, you can watch your favourite show whilst abroad
* Channel surf with either your BD remote or your Sixaxis
