Long story - please bear with me:
My parents were with Wannado (taken over by Orange) and never really had any problems. In April my father died and Orange originally agreed to change the account details to my mum's name. After a week of nothing happening we contacted them and they said that the account had been closed - no one bothered to tell us. We asked to set up the account in my mum's name.....( much boring information missed out) we now find ourselves 9 weeks down the line and still no access. :x

They had countless problems sorting out the ADSL line (only sorted 3rd October - but thankfully that means we are still within the 30 days trial); we've been sent two lots of modems, three installation CD's; I've been on the phone to them too many times to mention (and am thinking of getting a second mortgage to cover the phone bill), and each time you get a different suggestion/promise, etc.

I've even been on the Orangeproblems web site for advice from which I have downloaded installation updates and even that doesn't work. Today I lost it with their call centre and requested the MAC so mum can go elsewhere (slightly annoying as by this point they had promised us 4 months free service for our troubles - only good when you can actually use it!)

Looking back I am amazed by my patience....

Hence this request. I am looking for a trustworthy internet provider, who does not rip you off for calling for assistance and who's assistance actually works. Mum uses the internet for the odd surf and maybe banking, so very low usage. I'm thinking Tesco Value package or BT. Any suggestions as it's always nice to hear personal recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I have just switched to Virgin and already had one problem sorted a day after my switch over that my previous provider Tiscali failed to sort in 8 years. All for free and due to the nature of my problem they gave me 3 months internet free
suspended#2
I am also with Virgin (NTL) and never had any real problems with connections, but they are sometimes known to abit slow with sorting out billing problems as i have to call them every month for 4 months until it was sorted but did get free internet for those months for my trouble.

What are the call charges like when you have a problem? NTL used to be awful, when we had cable, I can remember sitting on the phone for up to an hour!

I am, I have been with them for 11 months, they are superb.

Take a look at their forum to see what their customers think of them.

I'm with BT and they are fine...I was just wanted to say stay away from Orange cos they are cr*p, but I think you've worked that out already.

50trillion people having a fine service can still be outweighed by a handful of people having problems with the same service and walking into a corporate nightmare.

Any company or service is judged on how it deals with problems not with a majority recieving the service they legitmately pay for.

Ultimately the big 6 are all complete nightmares:

Have a good long and thorough check of these forums:
http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/threads.php?Cat=

Before choosing an ISP.

Considering the contractual periods on the larger ISPs it's time worth investing.

I would ignore that " kick back " site, they have Talk Talk listed as good !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best go to Thinkbroadband and see what independant users think of their ISP's.

Any ISP that insists on a long term contract should be avoided.

Very impressive - saw you on there!!!!!

Free customer service, one month contract, first month free - where's the catch :giggle: All I'd have to hope is that we were successful connecting. Mind you I'm sure any problem could be rectified.

I also like that the customer support is in the U.K. I've had such trouble understanding people with Orange - that wastes time & money too.

Thats for the rep, we need to keep warning those that are not in the know about orange and their deficiencies. I started with freeserve, then when wanadoo brought them out I was a a little curious, but still found them OK, however the first year I was with Orange the whole shooting match went to pot. I have exited the Orange internet contract at my expense and cannot wait until my 18 month contract is up to get away from the company completely with my Orange mobile. My main beef btw is their customer service is pants and the have such contempt for the customer

Basically, Virgin randomly stop our service, they even got us by direct debit. Overcharge us every month and so forth. i will continue with it later. They SUCK!

So true about customer service. We got a letter of apology from the Care Dept offering the free months. Couple of weeks later while having a ding dong with customer support I asked to speak to the Care Dept and was told there was no such dept. When I told them I had a letter from them they said "no, you can't have" and put the phone down. Unbelievable.

Just wanted to let people know I have finally (big sigh) managed to get my mum connected to the internet

Thank you for all the suggestions and a special thank you to Inactive  IDNET have been superb. Low rate calls and you get to speak to the same person each time you call. They even ask to call you back rather than leave you on hold. I am going to change my own internet to them now as I am so impressed!

Hope this helps someone else who might be in the same situation - and remember "avoid Orange like the plague!!!!"

Why are they "the best"?

More expensive than Be (£18 for unlimited)

Slower than Be (up to 24MB speed)

Smaller Cap than Be (Be is unlimited - no peak or offpeak)

(Be also have no traffic shapping and good tech support)

Pipex are terrible, i would never use them again.

we are with Be* now, and so far so good. took them a while to get a modem out to us, but we bought one, so that wasn't too much of a problem.

They should have said "Entanet is the best (on Exchanges that are not LLU'd) :giggle: I'll be moving to them from Vispa hopefully this week.

Vispa are a friggin joke, usually get half the speed I should do, can barely get through one 20 minute game of Team Fortress 2 before I get cut off, can't find any games half the time and I usually have a ping of 200 - 400ms. I can only assume they and their suppliers don't have the infrastructure to cope with the customers. :x Plus they charged me £1 more last month with no notification or reason!

Does she have a Sky TV package?

If so then sky broadband (upto 8mb) is free with upto a 2 gig monthly download limit.

I think you need to read the last paragraph of the OP's request.

The OP is now sorted anyway.

I did, and my CS experiences have been fine, them calling me back to even make sure everything was ok after some downtime on their CPS.

So you can have your  back

You were obviously very lucky then, your experience isn't the example shown by other Sky Users at ThinkBroadband.

Same can be said for virtual any ISP though as i'm sure your aware.

I've been on the adsl guide for a number of years now and the addage is true about you only really hear the problem stories not the users that are happy.

Trust me i've been with some right horror stories of isp's right down to having a service cease when fast24 went bankrupt (I would'nt of minded but I did'nt even choose them as an ISP - they took over who I was with)

Yes i've heard the problems people have had with CS and sky but hand on heart when I had a problem they surprised me and as mentioned even rang me back in the evening to make sure everything was ok. As I have a geographical number for them as well instead of a 0845 or 0870 and free evening weekend calls then any calls to them are free.

Guaranteed any isp that gets recommended and becomes popular will start getting the unhappy threads on adslguide/thinkbroadband.

Glad the op is sorted and happy :)

Possibly true, but at least if that happens, then he can at least walk away after 30 days without any penalty.

Absolutely - I forgot to mention about IDNET only have monthly contracts, which is yet another great thing about them, you don't have to be tied in for 12 to 18 months
