Please can someone help with MP3 player?

I am considering buying my daughter an MP3 player to take on holiday rather than carrying a CD walkman and CDs. I just wanted to know - can I somehow take songs from a CD and put them on the MP3 player? Is it easy and is there a software I need to do it? I have a standard DVD drive on my laptop.

Also, can anyone recommend a good, cheap MP3 player? Just literally something that will do the job (and not break too easily LOL!). I was looking at this one in Argos http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5133161/Trail/searchtext%3EMP3.htm

Any help greatly appreciated

putting it from a cd to the mp3 player is very easy.

Basically i just transfer them from the cd onto my computer through windows media player

then its just a case of transferring them onto the mp3 player (for a sony one done through sonic player but im not sure about others)

most mp3 players open as removable storage devices, drag and drop

Thanks everybody, I may well go for the Amazon one as I can't find the Argos one near me, but will have to find something to top myself up to free delivery.

I thought I could maybe just drag the files over but how do I get the songs from the CD onto my computer. I know how to pay the CD but how do I save the songs onto my hard drive?

In wmp go to tools, options, rip music and select mp3 under rip settings. Then press OK. once you have done this, when you put a cd in it should have an autorun where you can select to rip from CD. when you press rip in wmp it should store the songs in my music.

It should then be a case of drag and drop

You can use AudioGrabber that looks like this :

http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/images/mainwindow.gif

It's free to download it from here :

http://tucows.easynet.net/files/agsetup.exe

Just put your CD in, tick MP3 box and click the Grab Hand !

The filesizes in the pic above is the uncompressed size of the song on the on the CD .....Audiograbber will compress it to MP3 ....about 3 to 4 mb !

Sorry for being such a doughnut, please be patient with me - Went to tools, then options (after working out what on earth 'wmp' means LOL!) but cannot for the life of me find an option for 'rip music'? Please explain in dummy language? :-D

Well thank you for directing me to a deal for an item which is far too expensive for my 5 year old daughter because it has a camera I wasn't aware I wanted/needed, has been voted cold AND has a huge scary giant eye which will probably give me nightmares. Is there a thread for worst deal recommendations, anyone? :p

Don't give up the day job, will you?

EMASU...

Aah no, I am not that slow that I would miss a tab with 'Rip music' on it  - mine looks nothing like that and I can see no option anywhere about ripping music

This is an excellent alternative to the Microsoft software. Needs an email address (anything) for the CDDB to work...

Thanks, please could you just make that arrow a bit bigger so I can see where you are pointing? :-D

MrsZerrok, Assuming your using Windows XP then you need to run windows update and get the latest Windows Media Player.

I have used all kinds of different software, but at the end of the day if Windows Media player can do it then why bother with anything else :)
