Feeling most members are helpful so wondered if anyone can please help me on this computer problme. Found this message on my laptop : Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Posssible causes of this error include sufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile.
Have not backed anything up - about to buy external hard drive for this.
Have lost everything - Favourites, Feeds, all files - text, pictures, music
I'm desperate therefore am trying this in the hope someone can help.
Have Windows XP system and Norton Internet Secutiy.

norton!!!!! get rid of that for starters!

when did problem start?

Why not just do a system restore to a date before the problem started?
Try the above good advice first and if that does not work, this will hopefully restore your old user profile:
Create a new user profile
1. Log on as the Administrator or as a user with administrator credentials.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click User Accounts.
4. Under Pick a task, click Create a new account.
5. Type a name for the user information, and then click Next.
6. Click an account type, and then click Create Account.

Copy files to the new user profile
1. Log on as a user other than the user whose profile you are copying files to or from.
2. In Windows Explorer, click Tools, click Folder Options, click the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders, click to clear the Hide protected operating system files check box, and then click OK.
3. Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\Old_Username folder, where C is the drive on which Windows XP is installed, and Old_Username is the name of the profile you want to copy user data from.
4. Press and hold down the CTRL key while you click each file and subfolder in this folder, except the following files:
• Ntuser.dat
• Ntuser.dat.log
• Ntuser.ini
5. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
6. Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\New_Username folder, where C is the drive on which Windows XP is installed, and New_Username is the name of the user profile that you created in the "Create a New User Profile" section.
7. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
8. Log off the computer, and then log on as the new user.
turn off Norton fire wall and then see if it will load.
Thanks to all. Will try suggestions. Assuming system restore / suggestions will not affect the files I have on the system.
No, System Restore will not affect any personal data you have on your system.

All your pictures etc that you want to recover will still be on your computer you just need the correct security rights to see and access them.

Good luck
Thought would let you know outcome....
Bad news : turning off Norton firewall and trying system restore did not work
Good news : the detailed suggestion about copying files to a new user worked!
Not everything back to normal, eg desktop is retailer's and not windows and a few of the displays are still different. however, very grateful to have my files, favourties, etc back.

Noticed someone else had same problem and will try to copy the action onto their thread.

Thanks again.
get rid of norton still though!
Glad to hear you sorted out the problem.

Putting your desktop settings back will be easy enough. The main thing is you got your files back.
