Please explain to me what a 'torrent site' is?

Bearing in mind I am over 40, I constantly see threads asking what is the best torrent site, what are these for and are they legal/illegal?
I assume they are for downloading movies but I may be wrong.

Is it condoned by the mods then as I see so many of these?
How do you know whether they are legal or not?

you download a torrent file which contains all the information needed to DL the file,

then open the torrent file with software which DL's it.

its up to you whether you DL "illegal" material

i got an infraction for telling someone to download something they were after. But I see people openly discussing torrents and swapping invites, so not really sure what the rules are.

Torrents, as well as Limewire and Kazza and so on, come under the arena of "peer to peer file sharing.

This is where you can download a file quickly by taking small parts of it from many computers, rather than taking all of it from one computer.

Note the actual technology of peer to peer file sharing is not illegal and can in fact be very helpful for people who want to distribute large files like beta software, trial software, service packs and so on.

Suppose Microsoft offered a large service pack to download. If millions of people tried to download it at the same time the computer would grind to a halt.

But if they placed the same file on say 20 or 50 computers and downloaded parts of it from one PC, parts of it from another PC, and so on, then joined it all up at the end on your PC, it would spread the load.

So this is the way torrents work.

Trouble is often people use the technology to make illegal files available (films, music, computer games, computer programs, books, radio and TV shows etc).

As an example, suppose you wanted to make a film available to everyone.

The film is on your PC.

You upload details of where the film is to a torrent site (not the actual film, just details of where it is). You become a SEEDER.

A person starts to download it. They become a LEECHER. They are downloading it from YOUR PC (not the torrent site).

Then another person starts to download it, they also become a LEECHER.

The actual parts of the film downloaded to these leechers is not the same, one of them may begin by getting the START of the film, the other may begin by getting the END of it (it is not as simple as that but you get the idea).

A third lEECHER comes in an they may start to get the middle of the film.

Once these leechers have got SOME of the film then they start SEEDING to others (so you can be a SEEDER and a LEECHER).

This is why you download different parts of the film to different users, so leecher A can offer the start of the film, leecher B the middle of the film, leecher C the end of the film (again simplification).

Eventually a leecher gets the whole film so they start SEEDING the whole flim to others.

So gradually a film gets 5 seeders, then 10 seeders, then 20 seeders, then 100 seeders etc.

When other leechers join they may start to download parts of it from all these 100 seeders, then it is all "joined up" on their PC at the end.

Obviously the more seeders there are the quicker a person can download the film, and of course it means that if some seeders computers are turned off it does not matter as there will be other seeders.

Note at NO TIME is the film ever on the torrent site. It is only ever held on individuals computers (just like yours and mine).

This means that providing a torrent site in itself is not illegal, as it is your USERS who are doing the illegal thing (although the torrent site know for certain that people are putting moves etc on their site).
