Ok curious - why/how has your network adapter been blocked? It may also help in getting round the prob.

So you gave him say 40quid and he gave you internet for free?

If the MAC address has been blocked for anything other than illegal use, not sure that you may be able to do much about it. Otherwise speak to the ISP.
Anyway not sure if this may help but laptops usually have a network part that simply plugs into the motherboard and can be changed quite easily. You could look in your laptop manufacturer's site on how to do this (if at all possible).

how about reseting my laptop (toshiba L300 running vista) back to factory standards? is it possible?

Why are you reluctant to give details? Could it be you're using hacked modem to illegally obtain free internet from Virgin Media, presumably? Forgive me if I'm wrong but that's what it sounds like and if that's the case, there's probably not a whole lot you can do. If you've been blocked, Virgin are probably onto you so I'd quit while you're ahead.
