Try phoning BT, I had this a couple of months ago (router problem in the end) they were there within 3 hours.

how?

I just rang them and told them there was a fault on the line, can't remember whether they checked anything there and then but sent out an engineer straight away.

You don't have to pay if there is a fault on the line surely?

they wanted £100 call out and £60 / hr

i have reported it online and they are running another check but thankfully this time it has stopped at exchange (last time went through and said it was our fault) so they might of found the problem

if your internet is working but got no dial tone on the phone then its a landline fault.

The fact your getting internet would suggest its line line error.
Contact your land line provider

Internet and landline are different frequencys so you would still get internet connection .

I have just had the exact same problem . I lost the dial tone but still had internet. (with Virgin via BT line) A BT openreach engineer fixed the fault at the exchange end, but told me the adsl equipment that Virgin had at the exchange had caused the fault and would have to be replaced. So now I can talk, have a dial tone, but no internet. Virgin are useless and keep saying it is the router (i have tried 3 different ones, 3 microfilters and 2 new cables), and I have been almost 2 weeks without internet now. I told Virgin that the BT engineer said their equipment at the exchange needs to be replaced but they are having none of it.
