I'm going to America in May and would like to purchase a cheap PAYG phone that I can pre-load with credit so I can text home to the UK whilst I'm out there.

What sims/networks will allow me to do this and can anyone recommend a cheap phone?

Thank you in advance kind peeps!!!

It's not going to be cheap to buy a phone here on a network here and text from America. You'll incur some eye-wateringly high charges for your calls and texts. You're much better off buying a PAYG phone whilst out in the states, I reckon.

Yep this will be the best way. You can get AT&T phone at Walmart for around $15 + $5 free credit. Cost $0.25 to text home.

definitely. or you can get certain phones that will take an american sim. Thats what my hubby keeps promising to get me so i can have cheaper calls back home while i'm with him in florida, I miss all the long chats with my friends.

Yeah I put my AT&T sim in my iPhone. Worked a treat for calling home.

Walmart and a PAYG cheapo phone is the best option IMO.
We took a quadband (or some such) unlocked refurb with rip-off Sim that was supposed to be the biz to Florida . Phone was fine but the Sim rinsed money and was useless. Went to Walmart and got a cheap phone and a Virgin packet - sorted - all cheap; and even cheaper if you spend a bit of time before you go checking out what's on offer.

Awww, thanks everyone:)
I'll wait until I'm out there and buy a cheap phone there then.
I used my contract phone (three) when I was out there last time and I think it was costing me 50p per text!!!!!

Reps are on there way;)

Ok just got back from the US myself and asked a relative who lives there and this is what i did

went to radio shack but you could go to wall mart as they had them as well and ask for a tracfone .cheapest was a motorola similar to the L6 for $9.99 plus tax.(NOT THE BEST BUT DID THE JOB WELL)
You then buy credit mine cost $19.99 for 60 mins $29.99 for 120 mins

trac give you 20 mins free and at the time radio shack was doing a deal where you got double mins so i got the $19.99 and got 120 mins plus the 20 free so 140 mins

You call the uk by dialing 18007063839 pick option 1 for english then follow the message dial 011 then drop the 0 from the code (YOU DO NOT NEED TO DIAL 0044) 1 minutes credit gives you 1 mins talk time to uk texts cost 33 cents each to the uk.I know it sounds to good to be true but for $29.98 plus tax i got 2 hrs 20 mins talk time to the uk

Any more info pm me

I have just got back from florida and I bought a Net 10 phone with 300 minutes on it (from Walmart) really easy to set up and use within minutes, you are charged a minute for any part of minute used and if you buy two and you are calling each other you are charged a minute and the other net 10 phone is charged a minute, they are brilliant and we found them extremely useful, we paid $29 for the phone with the 300 starter minutes and they give you 60 days before you have to top up so ideal for a holiday rather than truying to buy a usa sim, Walmart also had other types of phones that you can change the sim in but to be quite honest you would have to pay $30 to $40 for a sim the net 10 are great

We were gonna do that 3 years ago, but didnt find the cheapo phones were that cheap and didnt bother in the end.

Two years ago, I bought an AT&T sim off fleabay (think it was $10 which had $5 credit on it)

2 things to add. You can use it to call other AT&T phones free. (I got one for me and the missus) AND you can use those calling card services to call the UK from your mobile at 1c per minute. (At least you could 2 years ago!)

Shame. They expire if you dont keep the top ups going. Mine died with $6 left on it! (Had one $10 top up out there on both)

Orlando
I bought some net 10 phones off here last year but they had run out of contract after we went last year, they were great so instead of opeing them up again the new Net 10 phones were so cheap to just get new ones with a new contract, we bought them when we arrived in Orlando on 21st March and they have 60 days contract - they came with 300 minutes on them o when my daughter goes in May they will still be in contract and she can also use them ( I have about 200 minutes left on m ine - my other daughter used all her minutes on hers - but that can be topped up within the 60 days if we needed otherwise unfortunately its a throw away world

the a t and t ones from Walmart now come unlocked but are slightly more than the Net 10 ones I think they were $39.99 with no credit on them but you can buy your credit or just go the a phone shop and buy a PAYG sim
thats why we bought the Net 10 ones they came with 300 minutes for $29
