PLEASE HELP - Image Persistance Problem on Sony LCD TV

Hello, I was wondering if anybody could please give me any advice or a resolution to a horrid problem we've been having the past couple of days with our 2 year old sony bravia 40" lcd tv.
I think the correct term of the problem were having is "image persistance" and the colours on the tv screen have all gone a lot darker.
Has anyone had this problem before or know of it and a way to fix it. I've tried google, but haven't had much luck.
Oodles of rep and virtual hugs will be handed out to anyone who replies.
Thank-you in advance and fingers crossed somebody can help me.

Is there is a ghost image on the screen when it's fully black or white?

Image persistance usually occurs when the TV has been left switched on with a static image - for example at work, the LCD TVs showing BBC News 24 all the time now have a ghost image of the banner along the bottom. Unlike burn in on plasma TVs though it's usually reversible by just switching the TV off for a while or leaving it with a bright white image, I find simply turning off normally works.

However, it does sound like something else is wrong with your TV as I'm guessing you have it powered off for long periods of time already.

Ive tried powering it off all night plus resetting the tv. All i can see when i change channel is the previous channel in the background, same when i play the ps3. Image dosent seem to burned into the tv though. The tv is only a couple of years old. Do you think its worth contacting sony as this should not happen to an lcd tv.

You should defo contact Sony ASAP and check your warranty also. I bought my Sony Bravia from Amazon last spring and got 3 years Sony warrany when I registered.

It seems like the refresh is not working which will could be a tricky fix, though tbh I'm not an expert. When you say you've "reset" the TV, do you mean reset it to defaults from the menu? My Bravia is the W series and has a basic menu and a more advanced XMB style menu which you access from the blue button on the remote. Check all the settings in there. Can't really help much more as I'm at work and not near my TV.

One other thing to try....put your HDMI cables in different ports and see if that has any affect. You may have a dodgy HDMI socket or even cable.

Good luck

Hi tallpete and thank-you for getting back to me.

We phoned Sony today, but as we bought our tv from Curry's and didn't take out any additional guarantee it was only ever under the 12 month guarantee. They said that they could send an engineer out, but we would have to pay for it, and we therefore figured it would be an extradionary amount of money with no guarantee that they could fix it.

Also my fiance has checked all the settings which can be accessed from the blue button on the remote and he has fiddled around with those with no joy.

And finally we've tried putting our hdmi cables in different ports, but haven't had any luck with that either.

Thank-you for all your suggestions though and Johnmc's insight, you've both been very helpful.

I don't suppose any of you or anybody else has any more advice or ideas we could try, I know we're clutching at straws here, but we don't want to give up on my fiance's 'baby' just yet.

To me it doesn't sound like image persistance because from your usage it doesn't sound like the problem should be occurring and with the TV being powered off overnight I'd expect the issue to have disappeared or been reduced if it was that.

If there's any setting I'd check it would be any that are associated with digital noise reduction or cleaning, I had a problem on a Samsung TV over hdmi which looked just like image persistance but it was the previous image stuck on screen but it was due to some digital NR feature. Failing that I'd check if there's a factory reset available for the TV (which may be through a service menu) just to eliminate it being any chance of settings.

When you've been checking the ports, have you ensured there's no other connections active? Is the ghosted picture always that of freeview TV or is it simply the last image that was on the TV? If you're still getting nowhere I'd post on avforums.com as you should be able to find most specific assistance for your TV.
