Please help me find a good deal for a laptop??

I am not technical-I have the DELL vostro 1000 turion 64 with vista. I want to get a laptop for daughter age 15 soon-she loves mine but I know she would like a webcam built in. She likes to use it for pictures and msn-the usual teenager things, and for school-work.
Can anyone suggest a good deal or help me with what I should look for? I have looked at the ones on bogpockets and Dell site but am lost with all the jargon!!
Ideally the less I spend the better-maybe around £2-300
Thanks any help rep added!!

If you give it a few hours to a few days, MikeT should post some new deals for Dell laptops :)

She might also be interested in a "netbook" a small laptop. There are quite a lot out now and even more coming out soon, don't know how important portability is to her

yes thanks! i looked at that but i guess the vostro is heavy-i have it and it isnt portable really!!

That one expired on the 4th matey :(

The netbooks are usually cheaper than laptops, only really useful if you really need portability of a 10" screen

so if i get one of the asus eee 4gb 512mb is it enough?

If your daughter wants portability above all else, get a netbook (Eee would do but the Acer Aspire One would be better) or the Vostro 1510 if she want a proper laptop :)

I know it's true that my mind has been irrepairably jaded by years of Limewire and the various girls of my own MSN list, but I'd have to say that buying anything with a webcam built in for a 15 year old girl might be a bit of a mistake.

I wouldn't say that was the case, have you used one?

The eee is a nice machine but it's basically targeted at two ends of the spectrum - those people who will use what it comes with and will never want to install anything else and those who are happy to play around in the internals of the operating system to get it to work. If your daughter wants to buy a bluetooth adaptor so she can transfer stuff from her phone wirelessly or install iTunes on it to sync with an iPod then it's not the right laptop to get her. It will however do MSN and photos without a problem (although she may pester you for a big SD card or USB stick to store her photos on).

A <=10" machine would probably be a good choice but unfortunately they're all coming out now and in the next few months so if you wanted to do that it'd probably end up being a christmas present.

she uses the webcam anyway-but i take your point! she doesnt play games on the comp (she is a girlie girl) but likes limewire for her music-can she use limewire and itunes on the acer netbook as i will wait if thats better for her and get for xmas?

I would just get the Vostro 1510 louloo, basically same price as the XP version of the Acer Aspire One and not much more than an Eee but far more practical. I would phone up Dell to order it though and ask to get XP put on instead of Vista

thanks im sure you are right. i just wanted to get something different to mine (in looks!) and lighter. Her friends have girlie models and she is REALLY girlie and not practical at all! she does use limewire and itunes but no games(the only thing she ever liked was the simms!)
i just find my vostro bulky and not very attractive but i am practical!

The mini-laptops sound like the ones to go for but like I said there are only a couple out right now (the asus eee PC and the HP mini-note and neither would be ideal for your daughter (the eee only has 12GB of storage on the best version and the HP, while very cool looking, is apparently a bit slow for video and isn't out with windows XP yet so iTunes wouldn't work)). Waiting a few months should bring the Acer Aspire One, Dell mini-inspiron, MSI wind and maybe other contenders out and into consideration.

If you want to make a full sized laptop a bit cooler you could get one of the 'laptop skins', basically stickers that go on the back of the lid. See Backslaps and Lapjacks for example.

i will wait and get her something else for her birthday and wait for the netbooks and buy for xmas. I might buy a backslap for my comp tho!
Thanks to all rep given!!! louloo
