My daughters computer is running very slow and have been trying to do a reg clean up. I can find lots of free downloads on net which tell you of the problems but then they want a fee to repair them. Does anybody know of any that are free to download & then also free to fix/repair.

Thanks

Hi

I use winaso heres a link for safe download.
Run the cleaner and find probs
Write down the big ones.
Then scan only that one its easy to do.
Will remove 10 errors at a time thats why you only sacn one folder with lots or errors to speed this up ok.

Ccleaner - Completely free

To speed up a computer it's more likely that you need to run a disk defrag or upgrade the RAM.

I would also recommend downloading Tuneup Utilities 2010 & taking advantage of the 15 day trial (Fully Functional)

Dont place too much hope in a registry cleaner.

I think people place too much emphassis on the registry and how it slows your computer down.

Many of these registry cleaners are a con.

Computers run slow because:

Not enough real memory. The computer is constantly "swapping" between real memory and virtual memory, slowing the computer down.

Too many programs starting up when the computer starts up. Many programs set themselves to autostart when you dont actually need them to autostart. The more programs that start up the slower your computer is going to be. Stop the programs autostarting.

Hard disk full. If your hard disk is full or nearly full it can cause problems.

Slow broadband. Many people confuse slow broadband with a slow computer. If you have a slow broadband connection it can SEEM like your computer is slow.

Computers can also run slow because they are a few years old and maybe built for Windows XP (or earlier) but now Windows Vista has been installed which needs far more computer resources.

Sometimes the only solution is a complete reinstall of Windows and "start again".

Dont spend too much time on the registry as it is unlikely to speed up your computer more than half a percent (if that)

You could also have some spyware / malware / virus on your PC slowing it down.

May be a good idea to run a number of spyware cleaners like Malwarebytes and others to make sure nothing nasty is in the computer.

running xp, have done defrag & disc clean ups. over 50% free disc space still slow so thats why thought of reg clean. Also ran own spyware/adware and nothing detected. Stuck for ideas now to make it run faster was hoping to be able to cure it myself without having a trip to computer shop. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated. thanks

Would that mean I lose all existing stuff. Is that a complete reboot/wipe out or can it be done in system tools.?

CCleaner, ashampoo winoptimizer & registry mechanic are the best ones I've found!

Re-install windows is THE LAST option. I knew someone would come up with that sugestion. Keep that for later, after you have exhausted all options. And YES you will lose all your data unless you back it up.

CCleaner
indded is a very good and 'light' software that cleans the computer but it won't clean your registry unless you choose the registry cleaning option. However, unless you are aware of what registry keys you are deleting, I would NEVER advise on registry cleaning as some of useful keys may get deleted and as a result some of your programs (not the OS) might stop working. I would suggest running Ccleaner (cleaner only) and then uninstalling (using Add-Remove from Control panel) the programs you no longer need.

If that doesn't help then you may run ccleaner's registry cleaning mode but make sure you back up the registry before running that tool.

Another specialist software "WinUtilities 9.3 Pro" is available for FREE (normally costs $39.99) for limited time only (For next 20 hrs only). You can download it from here.

Only if ALL fails, go for a reinstall of windows.

just insert disk when in windows and select re-install. You will still have your programs / files. Takes an hour, then install the service packs.

With all due respect to the OP, if they don't know what they're doing they might make the situation worse & reinstalling the OS whilst leaving everything else on the computer is not going to solve the problem.

Of course it will solve the problem if windows is clogged up and causing the slowdowns. Its not exactly rocket science to re-install windows either (a few basic questions like region etc) :whistling:

do you need to uncheck any boxes to not touch the registry or just run default

Here's my checklist for a slow pc.

1. Check the RAM, can be upgraded very easily and cheaply! For Win XP run 1gb, for Vista 2gb.
2. Use Ccleaner and remove all the crap (clean tempory files, registry and very important - go into tools, startup and disable any startup apps you don't need)
3. Use Malwarebytes and remove all the crappy toolbars and spyware.
4. Use defraggler and defrag that mother.

9 times out of 10 it's like a totally different PC.
