hi,

i need an advice on this matter... water in my house would stop coming when we use too much water ( when i say too much means when at least more than 4 ppl take shower in a day) this has been going on for more than a year.... but water would come back the next midday. but recently since last 2 months we wouldnt get any water for up to 1 week... this applies only in the bathroom tap water... but in the kitchen we get water as usual except hot water.

pls advice why this happen if anyone knows... im going crazy with this.

thanks

have you bothered to ring the water company first?

or do HUKD supply the water and piping?
#2
so you get all the cold water you want and not much hot?

either something wrong with your hot water tank or you boiler.
will need to get somone out to look at it really.
#3
It sounds like you're getting air in your pipes so no water comes through until the air eventually clears itself.

Have a look here;

http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/curingairlock.htm

Your best bet is just to limit your water a bit more carefully
#4
Sharing a shower cuts down on water usage so it should go further:thumbsup:
#5
Sounds as thought you're on a water tank that gets filled slower than showering drains it
Then, overnight, it refills and off you go again
If so, you need to increase the pressure of the feed pipe
Best I can do
Good luck

is it an elctric shower, or one plumbed into your hot water?

ok guys, dont jump down their throat, there only asking if anyone has any ideas, could you be a little more specifc op, is it your hot water you lose or the cold? or both? do you have a tank for hot water, and are you sure your not emptying it, ignore this if you have electric shower
#12
i doubt its anyting to do with any company,
your getting cold water so its something wrong with your heating/ hot water system.
you need to phone a plumber. or if your renting its the landlords problem.

well its definately not the water company, there could be a blockage somewhere in your pipes, you will need to get a plumber in, i thought maybe you where emptying hot water tank but if its cold as well it cant be that

its a rental property...

could be something to do with your water pressure. does it come out quite slowly too?
phone a plumber and send him the bill.

if your losing hot water then it could be you have emptied your tank and it isnt filling as quickly as it should, when i had hot water tank once i had used hot water it would then run cold, yet your is shutting off, so you must have a blockage somewhere, and it must be on you main water supply surely

you are not responsible, it is your landlords resposibility, is it a friend? do you have a contract?
#21
you are responisble for the bill , in terms of how much you use and repairs to the building are his. includes all piping, gas, water, heating, door, locks, windows etc.
#22
Agreed it will be an airlock IMO, if it is only after using a high amount of water.

Try having 1 shower then leave it for an hour say then repeat. If it's alright then it proves you are using more water than you can supply when you have 4 close together.

As you have the showers check the supply to the different taps, note down when it plays up. Again if it' s after the fourth straight shower it is indicating the above scenario. I bet it doesn't cut off during the first 2.

Another check to do is find the header tank that feeds the shower and watch it whilst the shower is running and see how low / quickly it drops.
#23
It doesn't matter if your landlord lives in Timbuktoo, it still his duty to effect repairs, not yours.
#24
we had same problem. we told our water company, which carried out a research and found out there was a leak underground somewhere far from home.they repaired it.ring your water company:thumbsup:

so you have four taps, two in kitchen and two in bathroom, yet after four showers three no longer dispense water, seems weird to me, if it was an air lock it would affect all surely? unless the air lock is between 1st and second tap

The easiest thing to do is just to limit your water consumption. The problem happens when your tank completely drains and air gets in so the solution is to stop your tank completely draining.

Take shorter showers, if four of you are going to take a shower space them out so the tank has some time to refill.

Don't run your washing machine / dishwasher at shower times.

If you're using a garden hose try not to use it whilst someone else is using a lot of water (say more than sink load)

If it does happen the air needs to be flushed out, you can take a bit of hose connect one end to the cold tap in the kitchen and the other to the hot tap. Open the hot tap fully and then turn the cold on. that will force the cold water up the pipe clearing the trapped air.

You need to find out why the supply is less tha the demand. Maybe the supply to your header isn't working correctly as said above it could be a dodgy ballcock.

Find out what's happening as I said earlier and then tell us things will be a bit clearer then.

Follow redirons tips and I am sure you will have no more problems, solving it long term may need some work doing.

It sounds to me like the tank that is emptying is a cold tank in the loft. When that empties it is letting air into all of the pipes.

The cold supply is usually a higher pressure so that extra pressure clears the air in the pipe for the downstairs sink but there's not enough pressure to clear the pipe bathroom tap (gravity helps with the downstairs tap).

The hot supply doesn't have enough pressure to shift the air in the pipe for either hot tap

I didnt think cold water tanks in lofts fed cold water taps, only radiators, thought all cold water came from fresh supply (that is minging to think cold water your brushing your teeth in is from a tank)

If I am not mistaken there are two tanks...one feeds radiators, 2nd feeds hot water tank, although supplied from cold feed. :)

thanks for everyone who took their time to give their advice....i will try every tips that is given to me from all... including calling the water supplier again!.....

thanks alot

No not to taps, cold water feed fills tank in loft, which in turn feeds hot water tank. :)

So as you use hot water, cold from header tank (cold feed) refills hot tank,

yes, as i said, but this problem is two hot water taps and one cold water tap, it sounds very strange to me, i would say the hot water is being drained from tank and not filling, but that doesnt answer why the cold water upstairs stops working too

You do get them but they're not very common, for example this system uses just the one tank;

http://www.waterking.co.uk/images/diagrams/largerPlumbwithTank%20.jpg

That lay out would make more sense for the OP as the water in the kitchen is fed directly from the mains rather than going through the tank.

easy way to find out op, turn mains water off and see if you have cold running water in your bathroom

landlord is living in dubai now and wants us to sort it out.

If it's been going on for a year, surely you can wait until he gets back from Dubai?

If you have a tenancy agreement, read it, and then you'll know what to do from there. :)
