Plumbing help needed asap...please

Hi all, have a bit of a dilema. Went to turn the cold tap off and it wouldn't stop.(Kitchen tap) The more I turned it off the faster the flow. Searched everywhere for the thing to stop the whole water supply & eventually found one I could turn in the bathroom (we live in a flat)
It stopped the water flow out of the 'broken' tap, so I pressumed I'd stopped the water supply? But all of the other taps are still working fine, is this right?
It's the first time I've ever had to deal with something like this & by myself..... I hope I've done it right as I don't want the pipe to become pressurised and burst!
Will this be safe until the morning as I can't really report the fault as an emergency as I still have a supply of water?
Also as I was emptying the washing up bowl into the bathroom sink I found half a black plastic washer...is this the cause of the tap not stopping, and if so would it be easier to just replace it myself (or get a man to help)
Thank you so so much to anybody who can help :)

Locate the stop cock and turn it, that way it will cut off all the water flow until you get someone to look at it.

Find Your Stop Cock
It is important that you know where the stop cock is situated in your home. The stop cock is used to turn off the water supply to the house and is normally, although not always, found under the kitchen sink.

Knowing the stop cock location will save you money because the plumber will not have to spend time looking for it. It will also help to prevent damage in the event of a leak within your house.

If it is in a location such as under the kitchen sink, it is also a good idea to remove all the items from this area to allow the plumber easy access.

The only thing with that is i have absolutely no idea where to start, have only lived here a few months. I did turn some tap off underneath the radiator in the bathroom. :?

I emptied the cupboard under the sink.... and nothing under there that could help me...

Sounds like a washer had disintergrated in your tap, no big deal and no harm can come from leaving the water off. Could be repaired by anyone with a bit of DIY knowledge but if in doubt call someone..

when you say other taps are wroking do you mean both hot and cold, if cold one is still running you have not located stop cock, if all cold taps are no longer able to run you have located and turned off stop cock

Thanks i thought it'd be something simple but what's worrying me is the the tap thingy in the bathroom I've turned has only cut off supply to said tap, all others are fine & running. My dad can most likely come over and change the washer tomorrow, I just hope the tyhing ive turned will be ok overnight as I really cant do without a water supply with the two kiddies.
Rep on way for u!

Yeh that's what you would think but there is nothing under the kitchen sink at all :? A pipe leading to washing machine with a red plastic thing on it and another pipe leading to nowhere with a blue plastic thing on it & some other pipes leading through to the bnathroom and into the airing cupboard....

Yeh every other tap in the flat is working with running water, apart from the cold 'broken' tap, so I figure thats not the stop cock...?

no, you have obviously just turned the one pipe off, all my water pipes have a little thing you put a screwdriver in to turn the valve to stop the water, it appears you have a tap on this pipe to stop the water supply to it, when stop cock turned off it will stop the cold water supply to your property

The stop cock will be in the kitchen and when you find it all water will stop to all taps, shower etc

In our house the stop cock is behind a panel low down close to floor level is there anything like that, look for anything in the kitchen that looks like a panel that it may be behind.

You have turned off the inlet mains correctly, kitchen tap comes straight from mains as its drinking water, rest of cold taps and wc flush come from storage tank.
make sure your boiler doesnt burn out though.

All houses have storage tanks of some sort, go and look in your loft.

wrong, combi boliers, on pressurised systems don't require storage tanks and so everything is mains fed

Thanks, I think I've found the right tap that'll do me for the time being then. I'm new to all of this so wasn't aware you could stop supply to only one tap.

Thanks...There isn't anywhere it can be hiding, it's really strange. :? There is something that resembles a stop cock in the airing tank which is between the bathroom & kitchen. Theres a gold tap (similar to the one i've turned, but this wont budge) & a red round tap thing....

louise what hot water and heating system do you have?
#19
No they dont all have storage tanks, if they have central heating system with hot water supply then storage tank would not be needed.I live in a newish house, the stop cock is in the utility room and I have no water storage.Only older houses have storage tanks.

 now you're asking! The boiler says BAXI on the front, and the airing cupboard has a big tank in it..... I hope that's right?
I'm in a flat if it makes a difference?

so when you need hot water do you have to heat a tank up before use, or you turn taps on and its just hot

I have to heat it up, usually have it come on am & pm

to be honest i have never heard of a cold water tank supplying cod water to any tap, even when i had an old back boiler the cold water tank in attic only fed the radiators so we can assume you havent turned main supply off

i dont think you have turned main supply off, but as a precaution incase you have some weird set up i would turn this to off, incase you happen to drain the tank and it doesnt refill, although if you dont use any hot water you wont be draining the tank

No I don't think I have turned it off from the mains, just this one tap as all other are ok & toilet is flushing.
I have turned the hot water to off to be safe.
I've found in a hole behind a cupboard in my bathroom another gold tap. This could well be the stop cock....but it also wont budge, maybe I'm just a weakling! I think I'll leave it as it is for now as I do need some sort of water for the kids.
Thanks Sassie

& Thank you to everybody, I think I have repped you all xx
