I've been looking at jobs in the police & have some questions regarding some things such as training, a police course at a untivesity near me & what are the job oppertunitys like to get into a certain part of the police force rather than your average police man.

Does anyone know if their is a police help email address or something along those lines where I can send some questions to for information?

I would go to our local station or connections office but I dont think they have the squad I am interested in around my local area so not sure if it would be much help.

Or if anyone knows much about the force that may be able to answer some questions then please let me know.

Thanks alot
james

Not a police officer but have had a lot of interaction with them (no not arrested!)

For the most part you have to start as a normal officer before transferring to any specialist units.
There is a police recutiment site which has a load of information.

Certain forces have quite long waiting lists for "normal white males" and you might be better off becoming a special first

what area of the police are you looking at?

I think each police region has it's own website and scotland can be different but on the Grampian Site there is a load of helpful info.

Cheers for the replies. I will take a look at some websites

The area I am interested in is with the dog squads. I love dogs & most animals & much prefer being outside rather than inside which is why I am looking at other optiones different to jobs in banking & finance which I have been looking at.

Being from cumbria I have never seen any police dogs or found anything on the internet about them locally so I would have to be prepared to move away.

Am I right in thinking that you have to be 21 before you can apply to be in the police?

The minimum age you can apply is 18 years although you will not be appointed until you reach the age of 18 years 6 months

That would be Ok actually as I would be 18 years 9 months when I finish college in just under 2 years

Would join in but am sure bitsey will be able to asnwer all the questions you have. she has insider info..............as she owns a dog!:-D

I am led to believe you would have to complete your 2 years probationary period before you could apply for the specialist units, such as dog section, firearms units etc but these posts are fiercely sought after. whatever you decide, i wish you luck and all the best:thumbsup:

Have to disagree with your point of "normal white males" being on a waiting list longer then any other person, recruitment is through various processes, and is totally unbiased and fair.

Find the website of the police in your area and where they advertise all the jobs they will have the HR contact details so you can give them a ring.

http://www.police.uk/forces.htm

A directory listing of all major police forces / areas with links as well too.

I was going to try to get into the police years ago but I am colour blind which they do not accept..think that is discrimination to be honest...and I am sure 2 or 3 guys were taking a case to human rights courts on discrimination by the UK police force on colour blindness.

Well the Met has a bit of a waiting list but my understanding is due to diversity targets they are trying to recruit more women and certain ethnic groups. Infact some forces have actually advertised as such which caused a bit of backlash. Of course i dont know any specifics but was trying to point out that for the average force they are not always activley recruiting contary to popular belief

ive got a question -
how do you arrest someone who has one hand?

I have a slight colour blindness also, on one of the websites it says....

Severe colour vision deficiencies (monochromats) are not acceptable. Other colour vision deficiencies are not a bar but you will need to be aware of the deficiencies and make appropriate adjustments. The use of colour correcting lenses is not acceptable.

So it should be ok but I will look into it. Already got turned down as an electrician because of it whihc was what I wanted to do :x

The links are very good thank you, especially the policeuk one. I've learnt alot already.

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
