Heard this on the radio this morning. These things happen all the time. This is just more publicity for the group and an opportunity for the media to fill a gap until something bigger comes along.

The funniest thing about it was how the cops tried woefully to convince her to become an informant.....lol

Yes, I was a bit surprised that they seemed to know the tape was running - or at least had been - so they obviously don't see any problem with this type of intelligence gathering.

Personally, I see lots of potential for problems. The same tactic was used in NI for a long time and was proved time and time again to lead to misinformation being supplied to the police, wrongful arrests and other problems.

Difficult one - once you start paying someone to give you the kind of secret info you want, you nearly automatically set up a situation where informants have a reason to supply info, even when it's not genuine or only rumour, etc.

It also bothers me that the police are targeting a genuine environmental pressure group like Plane Stupid in this way. They are a not a dangerous group in the same way that a terrorist cell might be for example...

There may be a lot of problems but its all the police have,The tactics in NI may have been flawed but they also saved many many lives,I dont believe in this case they want to subvert plane stupid but watch out for people advocating violent tactics and even though the evidence could not be used in court it would point police in the right direction,

I see where you are coming from, but in the NI example there is a strong argument that bad policing actually exacerbated the troubles. It's pretty much accepted by all 'sides' now that the old RUC often caused as many problems as they helped resolve - a major reason why they had to be renamed the PSNI and reorganised in an attempt to prevent future bias, etc.

As for Plane Stupid, are there people within it advocating violent tactics? Perhaps there are, but it's not something I'm aware of.

EDIT: I should add that I appreciate your point about them not wanting to subvert Plane Stupid.
