Poor man's kindle/ereader a cheap way to experience ebooks - £15.00 on average

Just thought I would pass on this tip to any potential kindle buyers. If you have been tempted to buy a Kindle or one of its may competitors but have been put off by the high price especially as you don't even know if you will take to it or not you might like to try the cheap way in.

Many people don't realise that the old but good Palm Pilot is capable of being a Kindle substitute. It is not as good and not as big but and it is a big but you can buy them second hand on eBay for less than £15.00 on average and they are beautifully made products that are generally well looked after as they cost a lot of money new and were never in with the Chav crowd.

This might seem technical but if you can transfer files and no how to install a programme on to a PC you will find it very easy to do.

The software to add ereading to the Palm Pilot can be found all over the place here is one example though.

Thousands of royalty free classic books can be downloaded from here for free.

They have everything from Tarzan to Jane Eyre available to download.

An old 1gb SD card will hold more books than you will ever read as they are tiny files on average.

It's just my luck that eBay seem to be short on Palm Pilots at the moment but most weeks you will find plenty to choose from.

might be a cheap ereader, but most smartphones can do this anyways-it certainly isnt a "poor mans kindle" because it isnt eink display and thats what makes the VAST difference with the kindle.

still a good tip tho.

And you can download ANY book for free btw, just need to know where to look

I would love one to. I just can't justify it financially. Those bloomin kids of mine insist on being fed and clothed.

I know you can, but I can't really advise breaking the law on this site can I?

Op a kindle is well worth the investment if you enjoy reading books.

PDAs are completely overlooked these days - smart phones have sort of killed them off. But as you say you can pick them up cheaply and have a variety of uses. I have a Dell x51 which I use as a golf gps and for watching movies......
