Post Offices - A railroad job?

All of our Post Offices are being shut down. The reason? ... People are not using them.
Hmmm, why could that possibly be? Above inflation price increases on postage, year on year? £1 to pay a bill via a Giro? Scandalous charges for postal orders. Stationary and goods that cost twice the price of high street retailers? Uncompetitively priced financial services?
Is it any wonder that people go elsewhere? What's their answer ... to shut them down! [angry}
Is there anything wrong with pricing their product competitively? Maybe people would use the PO if they couldn't save money by going elsewhere.
Example ... my in-laws wanted some travel insurance. They paid £190 at Insure2Go. The PO wanted £260. PO is expensive, simple as that.
My answer, don't rip people off. Then people will use the effing places.
My opinion is that the plan has always been to shut down all bar the main PO branches. Charge tip top prices, then shut them because people don't use them. Hmmm ...
It is after all a money making venture [rollseyes in sarcastic fashion, sighing loudly]. My opinion is that the PO system is being systematically stripped to the bone by sharks.

Where have the bits that have been stripped gone, and how does that benefit the Post Office?

the only thing that buggs me is rural PO's closing early on weds :x It provides two people in the village with jobs though...and countless others. When i go shopping i do pick up my stationary cheaper elsewhere though as theres is mega expensive.

I live in a big town and all the post offices apart from the big one in the town centre close half day on a Wednesday :( . On top of that the central post office is being moved into the local WHSmiths next week :w00t:

I post 2-3 recorded delivery packets a day which takes me 2 minutes in my local post office and costs about a fiver. Show me a quicker cheaper way please :whistling:

its closing down soon leaving only one main post office in my town which already has queues out the door!

I was watching something about this on TV this morning, the dopy sod on there said that its only normally crowded in main post offices at lunch times and after people finish work. No **** Sherlock, wonder why that could be...... Got a right genius here so we have

The Chelmsford and Brentwood main offices have both moved to their respective WH Smith branches too. Looks reasonable to merge with a stationary chain, I got fed up with paying 35p for a single A5 jiffy bag at my local.

I love my little post office! It is also a newsagents (very handy to bribe the kids with sweets when I have to take them when I am posting my ebay items) and the postmaster is really helpful and friendly. I feel I get a personal service.

As for the op saying about thier travel insurance being expensive - it is the only travel insurance that I have found that will insure my son who has a medical condition. Every other insurance company will insure him but not for his condition (which in the very unlikely event of him needing medical attention while on holiday would involve neurosurgery which would cost thousands) which is useless for us.

So I say KEEP OUR POST OFFICE!!!

My mate's unemployed, I pay him 50p per parcel and he walks them around the country for me. Delivery times are pretty much quicker and the only aditional cost is new soles every few weeks- two old tyres can be cut into 20+ soles, so it's environmentally sound too

I hate the 'huh how else are you going to get them delivered then' attitude. The PO was a protected service for many years, which meant competitors could now become established. Imagine if medications had been limited to just one producer, making paracetamol. Would supporters of the rubbish PO service be telling people with all sorts of illnesses that they should just take the paracetamol and not complain because no alternative had been allowed?

Completely agree with the OP, if they really want to keep these POs open, they should improve prices and the service offered.

People are always going on about the environment, i will have to drive 9 miles to the nearest post office if the local post office is closed.

I asked a simple question and you just gave a stupid answer. Show me any postal service currently in the UK that will deliver 3 x100g packets via recorded delivery for less than a fiver.

Show me any postal service that will deliver 3x100g packets via recorded, apart from RM/PO! Not couriers, postal services. The fact is, there is only one unless you are a business. Some choice. For the individual, there simply is no choice. It's a case of 'like it, or lump it'.

Is the Ferry Road one closing too? I went to Ferry Road on Tuesday afternoon, closed. I then went to the one at the enterance to the beach, closed. I then went to Old Shoreham Road, closed. I then went and queued in the town!!!

Was I just unlucky as I thought that the Ferry Road one was only closed on Wednesday afternoons? Is it closing permenantly?
