PRESS ANY KEY WHEN READY

Desktop computer stopped working. Just get black screen which says
"BOOT FAILURE, insert boot diskette in A, PRESS ANY KEY WHEN READY"

No longer have a A drive. Have put the XP disc in to see if it will boot from that but not doing anything. Cannot do anything to change the screen, no matter what I press.

Also says before that message
"Novell netware ready firmware"
I have no idea what this is, not seen anything with this name before

Does it all sound fatal?

Nope
#3
look for it on any torrent site download it burn it and if your lucky it might fix the boot files on the hd
#4
if you are happy to open the case, check all the cables are properly seated, specifically the power and data (ide or sata) cables to the hard disk.
#5
Also worth going into the bios and checking the boot options in case anyone's been playing with them.

None of the CD's I put on are registering, screen stays the same

Nothing has been moved or changed recently. I am the only one that usess the desktop
(can someone tell me how to use multiquote!)

How would I get into the bios, what, or where is it ?

Apols if this sounds basic, but have you gone to BIOS and changed your boot sequence to use CD drive first?

If not, do that and then use the XP install disk.

the novell mesage is your onboard ethernet adapter, not worth worrying about its because the system isn't finding a "Boot" drive (your hdd)
You need to get into bios(f2 or del keys tap on system power on) to see if the hdd has been disabled if not its stuffed and you will need a new one.

Do you have any sort of Pen/Flash Drive inserted ? This may stop it booting up.

As someone said if you want to boot from a CD you need to tell the PC to do it;

On mine I can do that in two ways, either press F8 at start up and it will take me to the boot menu or going into the bios and in the settings there is one called 1st boot device or primary boot device just change that to your CD Drive.

As for your prolem, remove the power cable from the back of the tower and give it 10 minutes, plug it back in and then try again, if not when it boots up when you get the error just reset and try again, sometimes it will let you back in just make sure that you run windows disk checker on it

I have had this issue twice, onece was when hte Hard drive was on it's last legs and the second time was when I had somehow damaged the boot sector on the drive. That can bb repaired a quick google sould say how.

Not looking good, did as advised. Restarted and tried F2 and delete. Same result with same message. Do not seem to be able to get round it.

Pen drive, no nothing plugged into it. Sounds terminal

Hard drives never seem to last more than 18 months with me

Go nito BIOS and reset the it to Factory settings - see if that lets you detect the drives.

Some mainboards are not setup to use usb keyboards by default, as a precaution use a ps2 keyboard(small round 5 pin connector)
The keys i suggested are the 2 most common but your system may use other key, watch the screen after power on it should give you a message like
"Press ** To enter setup"

The BIOS is a little program that runs from a chip on the computers mainboard.
it is what tells the system to load windows..
The term ps2 is not about sony play station it was in use some 20 yrs before that and describes the ibm variation on a small round din connector that is used in personal computers

check you have a keyboard plugged in to the purple one
can you give us any details on the system, make?, is there any other items appearing before the novell message
If there is no msg telling you which keys try this
As soon as powered on start pressing loads of random keys, this may cause a keyboard error which will then ask if you want to enter "setup"(the bios)
as stated this is best if used with ps2 keyboards, AND MUST BE DONE AS SOON AS SYSTEM IS POWERED ON!

To see the purple one(not prince)...In the previous post is a link to a picture of a ps2 connector, it is coloured purple as a hint lol
Keyboard will have a receiver where does that plug into!!
if you still have the keyboards box it may contain an adapter

given up on the purple

Time to admit defeat. Have Vista on laptop. Desktop tower is over 10 yrs old (bits replaced over the years), so time to invest in new one I think.......anyone know good deals about. Don't use for any sort of games etc. WP, web and e mails mainly
