200 cigs (£17 on plane) or 250 gramms of baccy (£17 on plane) outside of the eu, if going with someone it is only £24 to double the quantity above (that was first choice flights)

When travelling from outside the EU to the UK you are allowed to bring in the following, provided you travel with the items and do not intend to sell them.

* 200 cigarettes; or 100 cigarillos; or 50 cigars; or 250 gms of tobacco
* 2 litres of still table wine
* 1 litre of spirits or strong liqueurs over 22% volume; or 2 litres of fortified wine, sparkling wine or other liqueurs
* 60cc/ml of perfume
* 250cc/ml of toilet water
* £145 worth of all other goods including gifts and souvenirs

They're more lenient when bringing from EU to UK

When travelling from the EU* to the UK you do not have to pay any tax or duty on goods you have bought in another EU country as long as tax was included in the price when you purchased the items, the items are for your own use, and have been transported to the UK by you. This includes gifts, but does not include any item that is intended to be used as payment or to be resold.

If you bring back large quantities of alcohol or tobacco, a Customs Officer is more likely to ask about the purposes for which you hold the goods. This will most likely be the case if you appear at the airport with more than:

* 3200 cigarettes
* 400 cigarillos
* 200 cigars
* 3 kg of smoking tobacco
* 110 litres of beer
* 10 litres of spirits
* 90 litres of wine
* 20 litres of fortified wine i.e.: port or sherry

Please note the following exceptions stand for these EU countries:

From Czech Republic - 200 cigarettes or 250g of smoking tobacco or 50 cigars or 100 cigarillos
From Estonia - 200 cigarettes or 250g of smoking tobacco*
From Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia or Slovenia - 200 cigarettes*

*No limit of on other tobacco products as long as they are for your own use.

* The EU countries currently include: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus (Greek part), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Irish Republic, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (but not the Canary Islands), Sweden and the United Kingdom (but not the Channel Islands).

Not that it will help you but it may interest others...

Within the EU it's an entirely different story, you can bring back as many as you want (within reason) as long as they are for personal use, they recommend 3,400 being the upper limit before questions are asked though.

Crossed posts there Tomm!

But please remember whilst travelling within the EU, you cannot buy tobacco products inflight, something i didnt know and came back rather empty handed :oops:
#13

stash a few in your case at destination, and hope for the best ;-)

You can buy 200 cigarettes on the way out of the UK so long as you are going outside the EU, (cos they won't sell them to you if you are travelling within the EC) and you can buy 200 on the way back, so if you buy 200 on the way out and smoke them and have a few packets left over you can buy another 200 on the way back. No Revenue Officer is going to take or make you pay excise on 60 cigarettes if that's all you have left from your outward leg. If you don't fill your bags to the hilt with booze as well I don't think you will have any problems. :thumbsup:

Also your favourite brand might not be available in the destination airport unless you smoke the likes of **cough** Marlboro.

If I was on duty when you came in and you had 280 or less I would wave you through and bid you a safe journey home, even at 3am in the morning :giggle:

Most just wave you through anyway, Just make sure the people at the gate don't smoke otherwise they'll claim the cigs for themselves! :giggle:

Like the bottle of rum I found on the runway one day, no return address on it, no receipt on it, so it went into the mess room for safe keeping :whistling:

Ermmmm well if you are a customs officer I assume you would have undertaken your BASA and as such you would know that we dont drive/walk onto runways, of course the appropriate thing would have been to hand the offending item into lost property or, given its location, it shoud have been placed in a FOD bin.

all the best

All this talk of baccy is making me hungry for some french bread and pate (on the way back from belgium of course) :lol:
#29
ive been stopped and had cigs taken from me

also the limit isnt a limit , for personal use means just that , anything goes , 50 packs of 200 fits into a reasonable sized case and will last you the year , you are of course allowed to gift these also but dont ever try to make out your gifting 4000 cigs , the customs brake the law and steal from the punters in this country and brake the law every time they remove cigs from people , to fight it means taking on the goverments legal system , some have and won , most dont botter , i didnt also but will at some point in the future have a return of funds , and how many did i have taken from me ? 4000 and the excuse for taking them from me ,,,, i flew out 2 weeks before so must be a smuggler , for anyone concidering bringing none eu cigs in then open the pack and spread them around your personage , customs doesnt normally check your pockets at all when flying back in unless from a drug country as an example most of south america

did you know the 200 limit doesnt apply if your on a boat ? not sure where people stand if using a ferry mind

Think its 200 fags per person aint it?
