hey dmh77 your best bet on this forum imo is to pm chesso or another member called Susannah, chesso worked in a school and that susannah woman is a special needs coordinator in a school i think so will have some kind of understanding of how it works and if there is any point in appealing an appeal decision or not....hope youre well and get it sorted.

No offence, but just because they work in a school doesn't mean they have an idea at all, it's often done considering a number of factors using a points system, or calculated using software, probably only the person in charge of admissions and a few others fully know the ins and outs.

ye, they are more likely to know about it tho compared to your average joe bloggs id imagine....i would guess tho that appealing an appeal decision is basically fighting a losing battle, if you didnt convince them first time round its not likely that saying more of the same will change anything.

'That Susannah woman'! :)
I am the SENCO at a school and do have insight into the appeals process. Have you spoken to your local parent partnership - I would use them as your first port of call now. Have you let the school know that you wish for your child to be placed on a waiting list (if they operate one)? Between now and September it may be the case that a child will leave or take up a place elsewhere.
If you want to, let me have a few details about the school, your application and the basis for refusal.

EDIT: Doh! Just realised the OP is talking about their own individual child and not Admission numbers at the school! Battle cry removed re taking on the LEA! (That'll teach me for reading on the train on an iPhone!) Have to admit I've little knowledge on how that works, though it seriously isn't a losing battle scenario. People can and do win appeals. I've certainly got pretty much what we've wanted, but purely because my eldest has a statement of education needs. That doesn't mean its easier, but it does make it easier overall.

Shame you removed it Guv. Made interesting reading about some of the other issues surrounding school admissions.

To be fair, not even our head teacher knew the process and it was only my connections within the LEA on the Children and Young Peoples Portfolio Holders PDS (Policy, Scrutiny and Decision) committee that I managed to find out. Hey, I still get a christmas card each year from the Director of Education and the LEA. (Though to be fair, I'd have expected my name to have been crossed off the list after the 2nd crushing blow delivered!)

That said... you probably got the gist I felt pretty pleased with the result achieved! (i did - seriously!)

Been there, took both my very gifted children to another school, and have never looked back. Look around and speak to all the schools in your area.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

The appeal was on reception class size, unlucky for us, there was always very little chance we would win.

What makes it worse is finding out why... our son is number 31 on the list, the difference between 30th and 31st came down to 0.18km... gutted! :(

He is 1st in line on the waiting list, for now!

So was the appeal from the school about their form admission size, or was it for one of your kids? I may have been right in my first reply after all!

The appeal was by us, because our little one missed out on a place at the village school. The school takes 30 kids in to reception class, and our son came in at number 31. I didn't see your 1st reply, so I dont know what you 1st said! :)

if he is number one on the list then you may get lucky as people do move and spaces become available, i would give them a ring before term ends to see if anything has come up, may even come up after the start of term in september

i lost an appeal for secondary school, but in spetemeber they offered her the place as people had not taken up the place, but she had already started elswhere so left it
