I would personally wait until the original documents come back... Less headache! I've owned a private reg for almost 10years now, and to be honest cars with private regs take on average 4weeks longer to sell than non private as you have to apply for the docs, list to sell, then wait for the docs to come back before going ahead with a complete sale. However, I have sold a car before the docs came back, though that was around 4years ago - I gave the buyer the bottom part of the V5 which was stamped by DVLA to confirm the cherished transfer was going through - then when the original reg docs came, I filled out the buyers details and sent it off for him.
if u use the current one, u sell the car with the private plate, so lose it.
plus I don't think anyone would buy it from u without the documents anyway?
mine took about a week the last time I did it.
