The only rule is that you can't have a plate off a NEWER car put onto an older one. That's just to stop people putting new plates on an old car to sell it as a newer car lol.
#2
You dont have to have 55 or any numbers like that at all, you can put anything you want on aslong as it doesnt make the car look newer. i.e, you can have 05, 54 etc working back or any private plate
#3
just seen duckmagicuk's post, says the same as mine but without the waffle!!!
#4
Just thought of a private plate for you
_5 AXO. THE _ can be any letter, for example, A5 AXO, change spacing and make slightly italic (illegal) and you get A 5AXO. Cost you about a grand

I was thinking more of this for Saxo...

haha Manj_007 id have to get another loan out for that plus iv changed cars now to an astra.

So the one im looking at is £250 and it says this:

Simply call our registration hotline on 0870 6000 142

Lines are open Monday to Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm and Saturday 9.00am - 1.00pm. Calls can cost up to 10p/min from BT landlines. The price of calls may vary with other operators and mobiles.

DVLA's prices include VAT and the £80 assignment fee. This means there is nothing else to pay except for the cost of having the actual physical plates made up. NO HIDDEN CHARGES.

We accept VISA, Mastercard and Switch/Maestro or you can pay by cheque.

Useful information to have handy when you're ready to buy:
The name of the person who appears on the V5C Logbook, the registration mark or year of the vehicle that the number will be going on.

Does this mean that the "£80 assignment fee" is the what we call "transfer fee" which you need to put the reg on the car (change of documents i think)

just a word of caution in respect of mis spacing/ wrong fonts/ italics etc etc , if you try to make your plate read something fancy, you fall foul of the law, as the plate would "fail to conform" and at present that will cost you £30 fixed fine, no points, also if the police report the details and phot evidence to DVLA they can take the plate back off you and you dont get a re fund.

Mis spaced number plates is a pet hate of mine , along with fog lamps illuminated when its NOT foggy, :x , using the mobile phone whilst your driving( to be upgraded to 3 points and £60 fine soon:giggle: ), so the bottom line would be think before you buy some fancy number plate that you have to hack to bits to make it look like something of interest.. YAWN:giggle:

if your resting your feet what are you using to use the clutch/brake/accelerator:giggle:
[helper]#19
I know that the fact of not having a fancy reg plate was incase your involved in an accident and drive off, someone might want to take down your reg plate but cant due to the stupid fancy styling of the letters and cant read it properly

not strictly resting but getting them out of shoes giving them a bit of a breather!!!!!

as long as you can control the brake/clutch etc etc there is no specific offence, apart from the offensive pong from your feet :giggle: :giggle:

nice one lads, night, signing off now
#24
Lol, I hate the ones where people use big black rivets in the plate because they can get away with it ("it's just one of the screws") and they can do things like make 11 into H...

Is it true you can make any plate private?

My car is getting on a bit, and i plan on being its last owner, and ive heard somewhere they you can make ANY plate private, the plate thats on my car ISNT a private plate, but its relivant to me (wasnt picked or anything, its just lucky i bought it :) )

So, does anyone know if you can make it private, as when my car goes to the scrappy, id like to transfer the plate from it to my new car, anyone know anything about this?
[helper]#26
i think what you can do is buy a cheap plate for a couple hundred pounds then pay the transfer fee, that way the original plate will be off the car and you can put the new one you made onto it.
#27
As i said above, i dont intend for the car to have another owner, i will be keeping it till its scrappy day, but i want that plate off the car before it goes.

Im sure i just have to pay the £80 transer fee ive heard?

Im not sure yet, its an auction, so popping along to see whats on offer for tonight later on.

Went on tuesday, and there was 2 peugoets 206s, and a tigra i was interested in (all 1.6, bit a jump from a 1.1 metro!) but couldnt hang about to bid as my little boy got bored, plus i couldnt really bid anyway, as my mechanic friend wasnt able to come and check them over for me.

Will update later on, really would like a clio - there was only 1 the other night though, and it was all modified so didnt want it.

Nice to know my insurance will only go up between £85-£115, as i got quotes on all 3 of the above cars, not bad at all really seen as im only 22, and until april i dont have any NCB's

Dunno if anyone has answered but in a nutshell yes. When you got your documents you can go and get your plates made up and stick em on the car.

Getting one for myself actually :)

shheeeeesh, it had to be you birdy that reminded me of that again. :p

Did you get a private plate then saxo?
I got mine :-D Its lush! Not put it on the car yet, youve got a year to do so anyhow.
Only took 2 days to get it from buying it.

I was well worried when i rang theyd get the plate wrong and id end up with something i didnt want :giggle:

I also went to the DVLA themselves and had a good chat, i found out, if youve got a car WITHOUT a personalised plate, but you like it, and want to make it private, you can do so - its £105 - so cheaper than actually buying the cheapest plate available on the DVLA site which is £250.
I want the plate off my old car, but, my mum wont take it off my hands, so im a bit stuck now, might have to buy it and leave it on retention....
[helper]#39
Hey Joshanna, no never got reg as was made unemployed lol

Hey people just wondering do regs have to conform to the old or new style? Can i just write a word on my reg like you can in other countries? Ideally i'd wanna write my initial and surname
