Private registration: What to get?

Ok, firstly i'm not a big fan of private registrations! But, I have been offered from Santa a contribution towards a private reg. I suppose it's a good way to keep my car for longer without worrying about the reg making me look poor in years to come!

So, What I really need to know is, can I make a 17 look like an H? The example is:

A 17ERO....can this be made to look like A HERO without breaking the law? or without 'much' risk of breaking the law

*Please note, the actual plate I am after is not the one above, but is similar!

I don't really know about what you're asking, but this has just reminded me that I drove past a car today with the registration "H8 OMG" and I'm convinced it was probably BG1.

the whole point of regs like this is to spell a word

why would you be breaking the law
#9
Why not have the ultimate personal reg and save money by changing your name by deed poll to your current registration!!!!. It worked for me...hope this helps ......from GD55 ONF

Lots lost in translation here but it might tickle ya. I remember someguy selling a reg on ebay...he was playing it in the common machismo role of many of todays aggro drivers..ya know "eat my dust" "I'm in front" etc. the guy was selling it on the premise it was telling drivers to P. OFF. I put it on watch just to really see how much someone wanted to pay to be Mr or Mrs Machismo. And here is the funny part (to me anyways) . When the sale was done I realised there was actually an errant O or 0 between the P and O. So it could be also read as POOF. I know a gay could have been ahead of me and bought it as poof but really I guessed and hoped :D some cocky git had bought it to 'be hard' and was riding around not with P. OFF but POOF.

some people deliberately manipulate certain letters i.e with 11, they put a black bolt in between to make it look like an "H".

Actually, it's the last offence in the UK to be punishable by hanging, it's pretty serious.

how dare they

im sure the OP isnt stupid enough t put a bolt in between a O to make it looks like a female part
#13
LOL

Having pictures and fancy writing is actually an offence. If you make your number plate letters look like something else.. ie putting a bolt where its not supposed to be just to make a L look like a t then that is also not allowed.

Yeah, It was the first thing I thought for HERO was it looked like ZERO! It's not what I would be having though. Everyone has helped me make up my mind, thanks :santa:

ANPR cameras read reg plates and compare a database to check insurance status for one. IMO the cops should really pull all non readable reg and check them out properly and tell the drivers to get readable plates (there are rules about it that should be followed). The whole point of regs is NOT to spell a word but to be uniquely identifiable. No screws, no scalpels, no extra bends here and there. Call me a party pooper but the roads and traffic are someting to be treated seriously in life. Yes I have a personal reg too.

I know you'll probably have looked at this before, but the fonts etc have to be exact due to EU law now! That, plus spacing, margins etc! Miserable beggars!

Look here . .

Page 4 shows the allowable letters!

 ditto

which is why you could never be a zero
#27
Pull you over, call for camera, you wait AGES whilst man comes take a pic of your number plate, they then send it to the DVLA. You are normally told to change it first time your stopped. If you are stopped again, the DVLA has proof you have been pulled over and plate photographed...
your then in the bad books.

I did quite fancy G3EKV but made to look like G3EKY with the E more rounded to look like a backwards 3, but I think it's a stretch of the imagination!
#29
So who owns P155 OFF now that wouldn't take much manipulating

It was never released I believe.

The best way to check is to go through the registration process for the congestion charge. It tells you valid registrations and the type of car they are on
#31
oh geez.. private reg... why bother!?? just donate the money to a charity please!!
#32
Got pulled for my plate as I had small letters plus a bit of screw fixing (reg is V800 OOM), cops took a piccy and letter arrived from DVLA warning that if I persist in altering plate it will be taken off me.
Having spoken to a PC he said that although altered plates are illegal he wont stop cars if they are only 'slightly' doctored.
Here in North Wales they are a bit obsessed.
We've got 4 private regs in the family.
Here's a good site to mess with your plate

Its a sure fire way of getting pulled over by the police.

Personally, when i see a personal number plate, I just think 1D 1OT

and you'll have to pay a back hander to the store that makes the plates up as they can lose their licence for doctoring plate fonts away from the EU standards.

that must have been a while back then as I thought plates could only be made by licensed stores these days and most wouldn't vary from the legal font / point size.

Nope i got them from ebay and wasnt toooo long ago.

You can get "show plates" made up through sellers on E-Bay or some high street car accessory stores. But to be legal they have to comply with BS AU 145d and display the postcode of the plate supplier. Most show plate suppliers will add this information for a small additional fee, making an illegal plate APPEAR to be legal.
