Problem with LACIE external har drive

Hi guys, i have a lacie external hard drive which i got in Nov '06.

Not used it for some time and have just come to hook it up to the computer to transfer some files across and the hard disk wont boot, you can just hear it spinning.

Can anyone please advise if they think the stuff currently on their is recoverable or not? Serious comments only please.

take it out the enclosure and put it in your PC or in another enclosure that you know works.

not sure if the actual thing is goosed though, sounds like it just keeps skipping, if that makes sense

contact LaCie and ask them if they have any repair software that might fix it

Unscrew the damn Lacie box and remove the HDD. Easy. You don't need software and the HDD doesn't sound damaged, just the enclosure.

Why the hostility? There aint no screws on the enclosure, its a clean finished product

sorry, i don't know what spinrite is but i don't think he can run anything on it if the drive isn't recognised. unless spinrite has some kind of hardware component to it?

you can google how to open them. you have to use a credit card or something. i saw it on a blog a while back.

Just saying to crack it open really. Google the model of it to see a guide how to open it.

Not being hostile, just blunt and making sure you go with the correct advice :p

Therefore, it sounds like the enclosure is not working but the disk is.

Before spending time/money on software to try and recover files, he should first find out if the HDD still works or not - If it works when attached directly into his PC or in another enclosure, then it was the Lacie caddy that was damaged.

If not, then it's the drive and he can then worry about the next steps.

The correct advice is to take simple steps, eliminate the obvious and easiest first, before getting into more complicated methods of recovery. Hell, it might even save him money.

Have a go at the simplest option first, and see if the box is in fact your problem - If it's the actual drive, then at least you know and can then move on to recovery :thumbsup:

Your assuming OP has a desktop and not a laptop
Your also asumming he has a spare case to try the harddrive in
You then say level the case open possibly damaging it

First step, contact lacie, who may say, yeap we know that problem just do this, job done simple
why say turn it into something that could end up with the case broken and time comsuming :?

If it's one of the Porsche design hard drives, the problem might be the power cable, which is a very common known fault of the hard drives. Does the drive come on properly? If not, the problem may be the power cable (had the same thing with mine, bought a cable off eBay for a few quid, drive was absolutely fine)
Google the problem and you'll get more sensible answers related to the particular drive

I had a similar problem with my Lacie external drive. Turned out it was the black transformer halfway along the power cable at fault. Phoned Lacie and they sent me a replacement. Plugged it in and back up and working.

I'm making assumptions based on what I've been told.

However, I would be more inclined to put the drive directly into a machine rather than assume he has a spare caddy - highly unlikely.

As for opening, he certainly could damage it. Hence why he should look up how to open one. Furthermore, the model number would help us find out more about the box, common faults and how to open it. I can't remember the model of the Lacie I had to open once (due to a similar problem) and it was a bit of a pig, but it turned out it had a screw somewhere that I'd missed - The magic of guides online! To be fair, I didn't care if I damaged the caddy, was more interested in salvaging the HDD for the customer :p

You're right about contacting the company, although there is a fair chance of them requesting the drive back and sending a new one out. But you would cross that bridge when you came to it. So yes, I'll give you that point.

Hi mate, yeah it is one of the porsche designed ones. I have noticed that one of the pins in the cable is missing but it still seems to power up, it spins up and then sounds like an old record jumping as though its trying to find info from one particular sector if that makes sense. Do you reckon its worth going down the new cable route first?

Yep that's what mine did before a few moments later spinning up again. Good luck if you try finding a phone number for customer services though :thumbsup:
