Problems with Wireless - also N-Class Router now being rolled out from o2

Ok firstly I have been having major issues with my internet, getting intermittent/dropping problems, I'm on the II o2 Wireless box package but have been told I can upgrade to the IV which will give me an N-Class router.

My problems are with the computer and the Xbox 360, on every game in multiplayer (modern warfare 2) I always get a 4-5 second lag where the screen jumps about crazy. I have always spoke over the microphone and asked if anyone had just received lag, their reply was always no. I have also pressed 'back' (when the lag happens) on the controller to bring up everyones names and on the far right everyone has full solid green blocks where I only have one little orange, it stays orange for 3 or so second then jumps back up to solid green.
The second is the computer where around 4-5 times per day the internet will go down and I will always get the 'page not responding' error, it's usually sorted within 5-10min.

The wireless router box:
Internet - Green flashing quickly constantly
Broadband - Solid Green
Wireless - Flashing slowly amber light
Ethernet - not connected (BB works fine when it is tho)
Power - Solid Green light

The guy on the 1st line team said that the Internet light should not be flashing constantly....can anyone agree with that ?

also does anyone think that the N-Class router (which they have offered me for free 6 months, £2month thereafter) will fix my problem?

My systems that use wireless are:
Xbox 360 - normal wireless adapter (not the N)
Computer - which uses the Belkin G wireless USB adapter
and only our iPhone 4's

Hey Saxxo

I have been having the same problem for a while now and last night was the last straw because for the last few days my connection dropped out due to the internet being severed, was playing Halo at the time.

When I first joined with o2 the connection was crap and I couldn't stay connected to internet for more the 5 mins in a period of an hour. (BT Fault IMO) I have had no problems until now.

Do you have a static noise over your landline?
#2
No there is no noise over the landline, already tested all that with o2 second line team,

the line has been given 24 + 24hr line test, said they saw lots of drops on the first test
had an engineer out testing and couldn't find anything wrong, he thought about a 'jump and shift' at the exchange but was told no from o2.

We have tried a hard reset to factory settings on the router

you name we have done it!! still get dropped internet and lag on games

I've had a major issue with my wireless iii box & my iPhone4.

Couldn't use my wireless, was very slow (slower than 2G Internet). Looked online & found it was due to the iPhone4 wifi drivers being crap.

I disabled "n" & everything is now perfect :)

Chris any ideas what's causing the comp drop outs and Xbox lag?

Do you think an N router would be beneficial?

Do you turn your Router off or leave it on constantly?

Phone your ISP & ask them what speed your line is set up as at te exchange, then do a speed test & see if the speed matches.

I don't think an N router would solve it, but have you tried the easy things such as new microfilters & a different router (to rule that out first) ?
#6
Router is always on constantly mate

Already had engineer out etc, was at 19meg but brought it down to 15 to see if that helped

Had new router and all new filters

What would the N-class router give me?

More stronger wireless signal I think, not an expert on that front !!
#9
Maybe that will solve the problem, have you got o2 Chris?

They have said due to all the problems I could probably get about 6 months free the £2 a month after that, contract will have ended by then anyway I think

Also if I get the N router will that mean I have to change the Xbox adapter to the N one? It has 2 prongs that stick up

check you are not using a channel to close to or the same as neighbouring wifi networks, a laptop scan with airsnort or inSSIDer will give this info. Then choose a channel (if needed) furthest from the strongest neighbouring signal.

your xbox is not near alot of reflective or metal objects and check signal strength on your xbox also.

the xbox is NATed correctly or just stick a static IP on the DMZ of your router

What speed do you sync at and have you tried wired Ethenet, does the problem still persist?
#12
Using Ethernet fixes the problem, all pages will load and no lag on Xbox

We have tried every channel there which was the best, I have also being using inssider ever since I seen it advertised for free in computer active :)

BB box is inter lobby where the front door is, there is no metal objects or anything. The comp ad Xbox is roughly only 8 metres away from the box

Hmm, if it works okay on Ethernet then a Wireless N router could be better, although I personally found WiFi is useless for gaming or streaming. The best way is Ethernet or get some Homeplugs.

Can't remember where the deal is, but someone was selling 25m Ethernet cables for a few quid. I got a few of them and ran them around the house, was a bit of hassle but you only have to do it once heh.

In this day and age though this is what Wireless is used for, just can't understand what the problem is with it :(

so what is the signal strength for the xbox?
#16
It's fine but in every game I play in multiplayer there is a 4-5 second lag

When I press back when it happens I can see my block is a small orange one and the rest of names are full green :(

is your NAT coming up as open?

if so have you tried putting the xbox on the DMZ with a static IP?
#18
Yes the NAT is at Open

I tried to do a static ip with the Xbox but I got all confused, what do you mean DMZ ?
#19
In tact just got for it if you can

Teach me how to do the DMZ and set up a static
#20
DMZ - demilitarized zone, basically you add a device by the designation of an IP to the DMZ which precludes the device from any firewall rules.

On your router you would need to assign your XBox a permanent IP address via its MAC Address entry on the router and then add that IP to the DMZ settings.

it is your wireless network where the issues lies, to be sure though

no probs

when you surveyed the airwaves did it bring up any or many neighbouring wifi networks?

what router do you have and I will look for the info.
#23
It's the o2 wireless II box that's all it has on the box

Yes there was 2-3 more people on the inssider, 2 were in this building and the other on was a btfon network but usually that's never on

I sort of over lap one

Have you added your Xbox on your router settings ? There is an actual Xbox setting to add which opens up all the required ports etc ?

How much are you paying a month for that now ?
#25
I'm paying £10 as it should be £15 but I have o2 mobile

How do I add the Xbox then Chris?
#26
Send me a pm mate with your details & I'll put you through the top package & your price will drop to £7.50 as well.

Name, address, landline, mobile & email.

Add the xbox by doing the following:

Connect to your wireless & open your Internet browser

Goto O2wirelessbox.lan

Click on Toolbox, Game & Application sharing

Click on Configure in the top right hand corner

At the bottom of the screen, choose the Xbox 360 option & add it

Save your settings & then give it a bash
