You're going to be stung again if you insist on buying keys only. Do yourself a favour and buy yourself a genuine licenced copy with COA.

mine was a genuine copy, and in panic downloaded the ultimate again hoping it would pick up the registrattion from the pc but it didnt. so now have to get a key for it in the next 27 days.

call microsoft tell them you reinstalled due to replacing hard drive due to virus they will give you a key for free

If it was a genuine copy, then the product key is printed on the COA you got with it. :?
Why did you think the seller would keep a copy of your key?

i didnt get the disc with it, silly i know, never thought, and the guy chucked it, as he didnt think i would need it nor did i, kept it for 6mths. but i have had this pc year now without problem.

'Certificate of Authenticity'

In your case it would be a sticker with the code printed on it stuck to the side of your machine.

Unlikely your copy of Vista is genuine if you don't have one of these.

Have you already installed Vista over your previous installation?

tried that at the start, and this foreign lady just said, go buy a key from a retail store. do search for the nearest one. thats a help.

dont want to spend a load, as later in year want to get someone to install window 7 for me, when what i have on this not as important, and i can afford it better.

thanks so much for alll your advice. its really helpful.

Surely you have a disk if you just re-installed windows. Something doesn't add up here.

i downloaded the ultimate trial from the website, well my brother did it for me, like that i believe. once it was up and working again, but its only a trial running at the minute. i was hoping that my pc would send the details automatically that it had to microsoft and pull it up, as having already got a proper edition on, but that doesnt seem to happen. thought they could tell from my internet details. they are just getting the trial details up now. prob our fault that.

no have problem cant get to my old details, and cant run long with this new download trial. had a disc from my older pc, which is still running vista, but its lost its box so no product key on it either, and its only one user i guess so not much use either. hope that makes sense.

You don't need a new disk just the key. I'd take it as a lesson learned and buy a real copy of Windows 7 and not from the same person again.

have learned that one for sure. didnt realise back then how important these things are. stupid student behaviour. hey ho.

will take it to some company to install 7 i guess as i doubt i could do it myself without all sorts of bells ringing etc.

do you have to offload vista to load windows 7 and is it any easier/safer for a muppet like me yet.

What, you just put Vista on yourself, why would you need a company to do Windows 7, you do it exactly the same.

my brother put it on but there werent any compatibility issues and technical things to worry about as all the hardware etc was already in place and recognised. i am not sure if something went wrong what to do with it. its seems a kind of techy thing to do, and i am a muppet.

Windows 7 is much more compatable than crappy Vista.

at the minute i just want to kick this machine out into the street, however the bits of my coursework it didnt eat, are quite important. several all nighters coming up to get it all sorted.

i was lucky i guess with vista it never played up on me, until now of course, but cant say it was vista at fault. goodness knows what hit the thing,

i have seen a few people on here asking windows 7 questions so thought it would be very technical, i didnt even understand the questions, and doubtless pretty dear to download it just yet.
