Program to test if a memory stick is genuine?

TanyaSpace Avatar

I read about this on here before...
People talked about memory stick pro duo´s and that they
tested if it was real sticks or fakes with a program.
What´s the program called and where can I get it?

:)

You serious?
I have 2 fake ones here and both of them work fine.
Just cuz they´re fakes doesn´t mean they don´t work...
;-)

I thought there was a program that actually tells you if you got a genuine one or
a cheap fake from china...Cuz I bought an 8GB stick 3 days ago off ebay (item number 270270263305 for anyone who´s interested)
for not even 14 pounds delivered
and the guy says they´re genuine...So I wanna check once it gets here. :whistling:

Dont you open the memory card and if its say "Not Supported" then its fake?

wiki
MagicGate is a copy-protection technology introduced by Sony in 1999 as part of the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI). It works by encrypting the content on the device and using MagicGate chips in both the storage device and the reader to enforce control over how files are copied.

MagicGate encryption is used in the memory cards of the PlayStation 2 and, as of 2004, has been introduced into all of Sony's Memory Stick products. Some devices, such as Sony's Network Walkman, will only accept Memory Sticks which use MagicGate technology.

All Memory Stick Duo cards equipped with MagicGate can be identified by a notch located on the rear end of the card.

Hmmm won´t fake sticks have that notch too simply just cuz they´re exact copies?

Thanks
Once the stick gets here and IF it´s a fake (which I believe it is at that price)
I´ll ask the guy for a refund...(simply cuz I hate it when i get lied to lol)

Let's see... eBay + Hong Kong + Memory Card + unrealistic price... nah could never be a fake :giggle:.

I'd never buy memory sticks / cards off eBay, not worth the risk when you can buy legite cards for a few pounds extra.

Well i don´t worry about it really.
If it´s a fake I will get a refund through paypal if the seller doesn´t want to give it me...
And as it´s a counterfeit stick and I don´t have to return it (as per that guide I got linked to
a few posts up)

Btw, a "legit" 8GB memory stick from the UK costs more than a few pounds extra lol

Alright a legite 8GB card will be but up to 4GB shouldn't be too hard on the pocket.

8GB will set you back anywhere between £17 - £23 though it varies depending on what you buy and from where (obv).

Three ways of achieving your goal:

[1] 8GB PRO DUO
[2] 8GB M2 + adapter
[3] 8GB MicroSD + adapter

Cheapest last :).

MicroSD can be bought for about £16 (cheaper elsewhere but out of stock), then the adapter should only be £3 tops depending on where you buy it.

So £17 is possible but only when promotions / stock allows.

I´m talking about memory stick pro duo´s here cuz I need it for my psp :)
So where can I get one of those for 17 pounds? The 8GB one...
:-P lol

That's what the adapter is for .

There's a thread or two about this somewhere on hukd if you can find them.

no, legit 8gb pro duo's weather sandisk or sony will be 40+

but when the 4gb ones can be had for 15-17 most go that route.

Most ebay and dealextreme cards are fake, but there is a fine line as to weather you will get a refund and if the seller is actually trying to pass something off as a sony or sandisk product that is infact a cheap counterfiet copy,

If the pro duo doesnt support magicgate, it is a counterfiet copy.

Cards not branded Sony / sandisk and just come blank, with no mention of a company name or magicgate, are allowed to be sold a "GENERIC", yes they are cheap copies, same as the fake ones, they will work, but may not last long and the more you plug in and out it will start to fall appart.

The fine line with the refund is if the card is branded, labeled or boxed in something that has the sony / sandisk name or magicgate on it. if it has either of these (including any packaging) but the card doesnt support magicgate when tested, you have been sold a counterfiet card (something that has been produced to mimic the real thing but isnt)

If it is purely unbranded, no sony / sandisk label on the card or packaging, the seller hasnt shown any pictures of it being a sony card (most have the sony or sandisk masked/greyed out) and is being sold as a "memory stick pro duo for sony psp, etc, works in these sony products etc.." then that is allowed to be sold as that and is not breaking any rules.

the problem with the listing on the item number you have given is:
8GB SONY Memory Stick PRO Duo MS Card 4GB PS3 PSP SS8

they have stated in the title it is a sony, shown a picture of a sony card, so any prospective buyer has been conned into thinking that is what they are buying. i cant see any mention of "library pic used" or "item may not be as shown" but i could have missed that, but if you read the rest of the listing it is only mentioned that you are getting a 8GB memorystick pro duo (no mention of sony in that bit)

so if it doenst support magicgate, you should be able to get a refund due to what is in the title and picture used, regardless that they have stated it is :
Package Content:

*
1x 8GB Memory Stick Pro Duo MS Card
* 1x Memory Stick Duo Adaptor

Thanks man :)
If it´s a fake and works (had 2 fake sony ones for over 2 years now and they always worked fine)
I´ll still get my money back cuz the seller told me after I asked him that it´s a genuine sony stick.
I quote: "it is an ORIGINAL sony memory "

I agree on the 3rd option, i have 6 8gb sandisk class 4 cards, all in kingston pro duo adaptors which work great in the psp, are actually faster than a standard official pro duo and only set me back about 19 for each at the time i got them.

I cant guarantee all types of pro duo adaptors will work or be as fast, I did do a review on the dealextreme page for the pro duo adaptors, as i bought 9 (6 for me 3 for a m8) and though were all branded exactly the same, the first 6 had the microSD slot to the left of the center and were much faster than an original / official 8gb pro duo, the last 3 i ordered came with the microSD slot in the center, so obviously a different build and were also slower than the first 6, but still quicker under copying tests and the benchmarks run when compared to an official card.

yes, if that is the route you want to go down, you are eligable for a refund, I have had quite a few fakes for my psp over the years, at one point that is all there was on ebay till people cottoned on.

all except one worked (which didnt at all) but all the working ones did start to fall appart over time, were not very quick/as quick as they should have been, and needed the odd patch up with glue to hold them together every now and again.

Since, i have passed 3 of them onto my little bro and they are still working, but all mine are now the 8gb sandisk microSD's (which obviously do not support magicgate as that's not what they were meant for, but when they are much quicker than and cheaper than an original, it's a no brainer why i got more)

Yes we had 1 too that didnt work after 1 week...but the other 2 have been goin strong for over 2 years now :)
And yeah, that´s the route i wanna go. If it´s a fake the seller will pay for it cuz he lied to me.

You got a link to the adapter for micro sd to "psp" ?
:-D
