Protein Advice

I occasionally do some weights like 3 times a week for my biceps, triceps etc and i do running and as im quite a slim frame, its quite hard to put bulky muscle on.

Is this whey protein suitable for me? How long does it take to start getting some visual results? My diet at the moment is quite good, i eat healthily and so so.

http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=100&prodid=563

Also, if i get this, how many should i have a day? Do i have one every day or one every other?

Cheers:)

If you want to bulk up, start hitting the weights more often & go heavier in your sets.

You want to be doing biceps, triceps, chest, back & shoulders as a minimum (leaving 2 days between each body group, I.e if you do chest on a Monday, don't do it again til Thursday).

You should take a protein shake of a morning, and one straight after your workout for starters.

You'll also need to eat more if you want to put size on.

My current work out is doing well for me:

Mon: Chest
Tue: Bicep & Tricep
Wed: Back & Shoulders
Thu: Chest
Fri: Bicep & Tricep

Nutrisport 90+ Protein is good, £42 for 5kg

it really depends on muscle fibre and your genetic compound.... generally if you're lean, it will be difficult to 'bulk' up but taking creatine (amino acids) and proteins will give you the best possible start to getting bigger.
As the previous poster said, just after a workout is optimum (30 minute window of opportunity), this enable the muscles to repair (thus get bigger quicker), don't take on board too much protein but have a balance of carbs proteins and fats, 60%, 30% and 10% for the average person performing exercise.

I'd avoid the creatine for now & just see how you get on with the protein.

Creatine dehydrates you a lot, and over the years, I have had my fill of creatine & never seen any real benefits.

With that protein you posted above, it delivers 32g protein per drink (50g scoop) & costs 2p per gram.

I get this one when on offer:

http://www.superfit.co.uk/nutrisport-90-protein-5kg-11-0lb-4.html

That gives 45g protein per 50g scoop, and even when not on offer, works out at 0.9p per gram.

Happy training :)

Dont bother with Holland and Barratt proteins they are cheap and rubbish, like Chris said diet is key for gaining muscle and you say you have a slim trim so your better off going for a all in one protein and not just whey as they are usually for fat burn and keeping your size. Have a look on www.monstersupplements.com they are very good in price and stock all the major brands, I would reccomend PHD or USN what I currently use.

Well I won't say anything. I use unflavored soya protein dissolved in water. At first drinking a pint of it was hard work and you question your sanity, but now doesn't bother me one bit.

Takes time, so stay motivated and dont give up after 2 weeks and you dont see that your building up.

Be carefull with protein as some are high in protein but contain loads of other **** which is no good!!

I use SuperFit and they are good and I take Reflex Whey and strawberry flavour good, also get yourself a shaker as they like £2 on the site as very useful and drinks not lumpy.

Don't buy that crap, seriously! It's horrid! Me and a mate bought two tubs, I wouldn't advice having it.

I did weights for 2 years, had a mix up of protein, I had some unbranded stuff (from the same factory as a top brand) - And it was unflavored and it actually tasted horrid, but it was ok. Then I bought Discountsupplements own Protein brand.

http://www.discount-supplements.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=10920

That stuff tastes amazing, and has hardly any fats - I took that for about a year, quality stuff, cheap too.

Someone then gave me 2 tubs of this

http://www.discount-supplements.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=4971

That stuff, I can honestly say, is the best I've taken, recovery mainly, it's very clean, good quality stuff, so if I did take any protein again, it would 100% be this.

Some history about me, I was nearly 19 stone, went down to 12 stone 7, then gained about 2 stone of muscle, so I guess I'm not a random. :)

improve your diet.

simple foods to boost protein are:

chicken - remove the skin, and try to eat only chicken breat as the rest is quite fatty
red meat (but dont eat more than twice a week)
all fish, particularly tuna
lentils
beans
peas

just make sure your meals are balanced with a high percentage of protein and less carbs..

regarding protein shakes - reflex stuff is decent and quite cheap, try 3 shakes a day inbetween you meals, use semi/skimmed milk, you can mix it with a little water

2 weeks is a bit far fetched.

Guaranteed 4 weeks I'd say.

Oh yea, you need a shaker, they make mixing it soooo much easier.

Superfit threw in a free one last time I ordered that protein :)

Shakers are great, I agree. :)

Used to mix up 2 raw eggs, oats, and milk in a large glass. :D
#26
I used to mix it in a pint glass for about 9 years (chewing on the lumps lol).

Only got a shaker this year, never knew how good they were :D
