my friend who turned 16 3 months ago applied for his provisional driving license, he got a form from the post office, sent it off and received it, i thought you could only apply 3 months before your 17th birthday, so how has he got his? also i was about to apply for one on the direct.gov website and i got halfway through and it said "As you are under 17 and are not receiving disability allowance, you will only receive a provisional moped license". So does this mean when im 17 ill have to apply for one again??

follow the same procedure as your mate did, use post office form, then see if you get it, frankly there's no need to get it yet, you wont be able to get in the driving seat til youre 17...

You can send off for your provisional licence three months before your 17th, but it won't be valid until your 17th birthday.

If you receive a higher rate disability allowance your license is valid from the age of 16... not sure why that is though sorry :?

okay i just rang my mate and hes got like 4 different vehicle types on the back of his license, the moped he can drive now but the rest are dates in 2008, so I'm guessing he cant drive them, so if i apply online will i get the same card as his will all the different types of vehicle on them and dates when i can drive them??

If you get the higher rate disability allowance then you can learn to drive at 16 with a specialised driving instructor and can apply for the provisional 3 months before your 16th birthday.

As a qualified driving instructor i'm not trained to teach the disabled but there are a few in most towns and cities across the UK.

just to note i don't get a disability allowance as I'm not disabled, i think thats a generic message given to any one under the age of 17.

I'm just thinking as it only says moped, i will have to apply for it again BUT if its like my friend, who has got a car on his license but the date when he can drive it,(his 17th birthday) if thats the case, its alright as I'm 17 in September, it'd be good to get i sorted out now.

Are you actually wanting to ride a moped?

Otherwise if your going to get a licence now and want to learn to drive a car, Make sure its dated from the start of your 17th birthday, Otherwise you'll only have 9 months to do lessons (Minus holidays, Christmas, Bad weather etc.)

You'll probably pass easy in 9 months, But no point have less months just to get a licence earlier!

But wont it automatically be my 17th birthday which will be the date that shows when i can drive? i didnt know there was a 12 month time frame for learning to drive? but was looking to take the test within 2 months taking 20 lessons in 2 moths with the test at the end of the 2nd month.

No IOM, it's two years you get to pass your test, not one.

You can drive a scooter on a provisional (if you do your CBT) at 16, So if you applied now, The provisional would start from the date its issued and you wouldn't be able to drive a car till your 17th birthday.

The Provisional is valid for 12 months from the issue/start date.
You can also set the start date to your birthday anyway, So you may receive it in 2 weeks, But the licence isn't actually valid untill whatever date you've set.

If your not wanting to ride a moped/scooter, I'd set it to start on your 17th birthday, Simply because things can change, You might not get on with an instructor, Unless you've saved up now, Your job might change etc.

Ah, Apologies then, Its different over here, A provisional licence is only valid for one year, Before you have to renew again.

Also you don't need a provisional licence to take the theory test, So you could get that out of the way first (Unless its different over here again! :giggle: )

You are both confusing how long a provisional is valid for with how long you have to pass your test after passing the thory.

Where'd I mention a theory was 1 year?, Lol!

A theory test is valid for 2 years (over here) till you take your practical test and a provisional is valid for 1 year. (over here anyway!)

I got my provisional license at 16 years old so that I could use a 50cc scooter and I had that until I passed my car driving test at 17 and sent it to the DVLA with the certificate
